moving from Florida to Harrisonburg. Need area recs, please

We are having to make a very sudden move from Florida to Harrisonburg (or the surrounding area) for my Dh's job.  Can anyone recommend a nice area or let me know of any not-so-nice areas to stay away from?

We have one child and would like something that is more laid back, small town and we would like some land if possible.

Anyone know what the going rate for a rental property is?  We are use to paying around $800 for a 3 bedroom, here in Florida.

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!  Thank you so much!

  • Harrisonburg is a great place.  JMU is there so a lot of the complexes are mostly students.  I don't live there so I'm not much help with which ones are more family friendly (I would think most of the complexes off of Port Republic Road would be more college students).

  • Welcome to the Shenandoah Valley. It's a beautiful place, I'm sure you'll love it.  As the pp mentioned, anything off of port republic road will likely be mostly students, which if you have a small child you may not want. (noise).  But I would recommend if you want to stay in the Harrisonburg area maybe country club road, old furnace road, etc. There are some apartments there that are quite nice and some condos that are rented. I lived in one called Madison Manor for a while and really liked it.

You might also consider moving into the county (lower tax rates).  Bridgewater is a nice place, or Mt. Crawford.  You might also look in Dayton.  These towns are typically a little older, although there is a small private college in Bridgewater as well. You're probably going to find cheaper housing in Rockingham Co then you are Harrisonburg.
