I work in the UK, but my boss is in Germany. I've actually never met him (he replaced the supervisor I had when I started here, who I did meet). We've spoken on the phone a few times, but I don't really know him that well. The fact that he called me personally means it's either something VERY good or VERY bad.
He called yesterday while I was unavailable and left a message on my mobile, asking me to return his call as soon as I could. When I was available, I called but he was busy so I left a message. He never called back. So today I called, and again he was unavailable.
Have I done my part to call him back? If it's THAT important, he'll call ME again right? I know I can be hard to get in touch with, and will be unavailable most of this afternoon, so whatever it is might have to wait until Monday. I hate waiting for news (good OR bad, though I have no idea what the call is regarding)....but I don't want to pester him.
UGH.
Re: Returning a call from my boss.....
I think you've done your part.
I totally understand where you're coming from, my old manager lived/worked in Mexico and I only briefly met him three times in the time that I worked for him, so we had a totally awkward "don't call me and I won't call you" relationship. Sorry that you're going to have to wonder all weekend.

I would probably consider emailing him with some times when you've been available.
'Hiya boss, got your VM. Tried calling back yesterday and today but got your voicemail. So that we don't play phone tag, I'll be available until x time today and then on Monday. Speak with you soon!'
I like this idea. I don't really want to call Germany all the time.
