Reflux:(

Poor Layla had to go to the doctor today, she's been projectile vomiting... After the tests found out she has reflux and now has to take zantac twice a day:( Makes me sad but hoping it's better than her throwing up after feedings a couple times per day. I know it's common but someone please tell me this doesn't last forever!

Re: Reflux:(

  • Hang in there!  It really doesn't last forever!   It felt like the days dragged on and Nolan was just miserable, but eventually the meds did their job and we figured out how he was he happiest.

For us, the pedi kept telling me the meds should take care of it.   After the 10 day wait, I didn't see improvements and brought him back in.  I asked if I should go off dairy (a big contributor to reflux).  The pedi said no, she was pretty certain it was just his system.   After another few days, I figured "what the heck! what do I have to lose?"   So I went off dairy and another 2 weeks later he was such a different baby.  No more fussing during and after feedings.   Also, no caffeine (how do you say that to a new mother????)   I also watched my bean and broccoli intake and any other "gassy foods."    Nolan was a "nap striker" and I think this was in part due to his reflux.  We finally found one of those papasan swings on Craigslist and that was seriously our saving grace.   It swung side to side (as well as back and forth) and for whatever reason he liked it better than just our back and forth swing.   Plus, he was kept upright and totally cradled in it.   He went from 10 minute naps to 2 hour naps in it.  It.was. amazing.   He napped in it until he outgrew it at 6 months.

     Do what works.

Good luck!   At Nolan's 6 month check-up, the pedi gave him the green light to go off meds.  It took me AT LEAST another 2 weeks to fade him.  I did not want our happy times to end, and lo and behold, he really didn't need them.   His system had matured and his body was now in control.

Keep burpcloths and bibs on hand at all times.  :)   And know that you are not alone.  There are so many babies and mommies going through this.   There really should be a support group for it!   Please PM me or Facebook me if you need anything else!!   Wish I didn't live so far away!

  • So sorry :( Felix had a mild case of reflux for about 4-5 months. One thing our pedi told us was to keep him at least semi-upright for about 20 minutes after eating. We also never used our bumbo seat -- it always made him puke.

    Good luck!

  • Thank you! Thankfully she's a great sleeper, it's just the throwing up, it seems that she throws up all of what she just ate when she does it, not every feeding but often enough I worry she's not getting enough hoping this will help her to keep it all down:(

I know it looks like a lot then they throw up, but really it's just a small amount compared to their total intake! You'll see -- she'll keep growing like a weed in spite of the vomiting. Hopefully the meds will make her feel better soon. I know I get cranky when I forget to take my Prevacid! :)

  • Yes, like Kimberly said, it definitely looks like more than what they actually took in!  Nolan had a pretty good case of reflux and still managed to gain weight every checkup.   We're thinking of you!
