HELP! Moving to FL from NY

Hi,

My husband, 7 month old and I (and dog!) are relocating to FL from NY soon (job related) and being lifelong NYers, we're a bit overwhelmed.  We can live almost anywhere in the state but right now we're researching the west coast.  We are looking for an area near a city (population around 30,000+) with access to many stores, restaurants, things to do, etc and good schools.  This may not narrow it down (ha!) but I figured Floridians may be able to offer some guidance/insight.

Many thanks.

  • Most of us are in the Tampa area, so I say Tampa! And as a fellow NY/NJ girl, there are lots of people from up north in this area, which I like. Where in NY are you from?

  • Yes, most of us are from Tampa.  As a Tampa native, I love it but I'm biased.  We live about 20 minutes east of downtown Tampa.  Do you have specific questions?

  • Hi guys,

We are from Westchester County (White Plains), but have been living in Dutchess for the past few years. We miss being near a big city, especially now that we have a child.  Which areas of Tampa/surrounding areas would be good to look into? I guess if I had to sum it up, we're looking for a nice area to raise a family  :-)

  • I am from Long Island and moved to Miami 2 years ago. We recently moved over to Sarasota. It is beautiful here but very slow and older.

  • I live in the Riverview/Valrico area (which like I said, is 20-30 min east of Tampa).  A lot of people also like the Westchase area, which is 20-30 min NW of downtown.  And then there's South Tampa which is in the heart of it all but you are definitely paying more per square foot and a lot of the homes are older.  When do you anticipate moving?

  • I'm in Orlando if you have any questions about it! I was a kid when I moved from NY, but my cousins moved down here from LI when they were in college and they'll never go back!
