Childbirth class??

Worth it, or waste of time?   Most of the women on the national board seem to feel it was a waste of time and money, and you're better off just watching a birthing video from the library.  Thoughts?

p.s.  sorry if this has been asked -- I used to ignore most of the baby-related discussions when it didn't pertain to me!

p.p.s.  anyone else really annoyed that the boards were down all day, or was I the only one with nothing to do today?

Re: Childbirth class??

  • I took a 5 wk childbirth prep course 1 night a week. i am glad we took it. (it was also offered as a Full day saturday type thing)

It was offered by the hospital (Vassar), I don't remember exactly what it cost but I felt like they covered info from actual birth process, c sections, inductions, breathing techniques etc that it was worth it.

I'm sure a few times my DH didn't agree - but he actually still refers to things we learned if it comes up in a discussion!

and, yes I was so annoyed by the boards today!

  • I thought it was helpful and glad we took it. It gives you a run down of the process, involves DH, you tour the hospital, practice laboring methods, etc. The other class was a waste, I forget the name, child care or whatever. Oh and I found the breastfeeding class VERY helpful.

And yes, I was super annoyed the boards were down all day :(

  • I really enjoyed our birthing class and felt like I got a lot of information out of it. Not oby that I still talk to like 5 of the girls from the class and all of our babies are just weeks apart. So it's nice because I came out of it with friends too :)

This is the one I took too. Actually our last class was this past Tuesday. I am so happy we took it. Idk what your hospital charges but we paid $115. Totally worth every penny. They covered everything that mrse mentioned as well as vaccines, meds and everything you can think of.

  • I thought it was worth it!  We did it on a "crash course" on a  Saturday, I feel like DH found it very informative!   i don't think he knew what to expect.
  • We just watched a video, which I can never remember the name of....but a few ladies on this board recommended it to me and we found it very helpful and informative. The classes we found were so expensive and we had so many people telling us they were a waste of time and money so we opted for the video instead.

However if you plan of giving birth naturally (without an epi or other drugs) you may want to consider taking a class about labor and breathing techniques to get you thru it. That's something that I wish I had done, but I also expected an epi and was caught off guard by the fact that I couldn't get one, so my natural birth wasn't planned. This is something I'm looking into now since there is a very good chance I won;t be able to get an epi again.

Oh no!!! Why couldn't you get the epi? That's my biggest fear!!!

  • We enjoyed ours also.  We only did a 1 day course at our hospital.  We did it 1 month before DS was born, we skipped one the 2nd time around.

  • We did a quick hr crash course and tour and I felt like that was plenty. Everything can change so quickly that I never felt the need to take a course. The nurses at the hospital were great and talked me through everything and listened to my fears and requests and then after the baby was born they gave H a mini course on things he needed to know and answered any questions he had.

THIS! I delivered at Nyack and I could not justify spending $175. Plus I would have had to take time off work to attend.  I did however schedule a tour-that you can just call up for. That was very helpful.

The video is called "Laugh and Learn about Childbirth" Its very informative. DH sat down and watched it too.  We did it over the course of a few nights. GL

  • Oh and 1 more thing...I know a lot of people attended the all day class. Because of Ts schedule we couldn't do that but I'm glad we went for the 5 nights. 2 hrs a night for 5 weeks was a better fit not only because of his schedule but because it was a lot of information to take in. It gave me the oppotunity to let things sink in. But that is just my experience and I know everyone is different. I have a ish ton of handouts. If you want, I can copy them and send them to you. Let me know :)

  • We took a refresher course (I think or was $75) and it was well worth it. It covered everything (even if I were a 1st time mommy I 'd recommend it.) The breathing tequniques truly did help me through the pains of labor.  It totally sucked that the nest was down yesterday. I ended up finding a new time-suck (Pintererst).

  • I took a class. I think it helped ease my nerves a bit going into labor, I felt less anxious about what was about to happen to me. I ended up having a c-section but I still didn't consider it to be a waste of money or anything.

  • my husband loved it; i hated it. i thought it was a waste of time and money.

about halfway through, dh asked the instructor if she ever had it so one person came alone to the class instead of in pairs, and she asked him what he didn't like about it, and he told her he wanted to leave me home and come alone - I was the problem!

we took it through Valley Hosp even though I gave birth at Nyack because we lived in NJ and passed it on the way home from work at the time.

they made me decorate a paper plate with happy place images so dh could hold it in front of me while i labored. not my style.

Yeah, this is the kind of stuff I'm afraid of.  I'd either laugh in their faces, or get so annoyed I just walk out.

This is an interesting idea.  I know they offer one at Nyack but it didn't occur to me that I could just take that instead of the full class.  I'll have to look into that.  It will be nearly impossible to get DH to be able to attend one of those multi-week classes, and I don't know if I could sit through an all-day Saturday class.

Nyack.  Unless my nightmare about being one of those women stuck in traffic who has to deliver on the side of the road actually comes true.

  • Elf- I don't know how to quote from my phone and I'm at work and can't get on the nest.   Yes, we took the refresher course at Nyack. The instructor was Darlene. She actually called me in advance to find out what I definitely wanted to cover. She also gave me her personal cell after the class if I had any more questions, etc.
