Fireplace question

Is there anything safe I can add to our fires to make the house smell pleasant? The fire is nice enough, but I'd like to add something extra. I considered burning cinnamon, but I'm concerned about things putting out toxic smoke - and the house smelling like burnt cinnamon.

I did some online searching but found nothing helpful.

FWIW, we have 2 dogs and 2 cats, so whatever we use needs to be safe for them as well.

Burn candles. 

I used to have a fireplace insert and we would put a kettle on top with cinnamon sticks and water on top.

For a regular fireplace it's safest to just do candles.

Or do the kettle thing on the stove.

One of the things that you have to think about if you want to use something that depenses a smell from the fireplace.. Your fireplace isn't venting properly if you can smell it.  Your flue should be taking all the fireplace smells up with it and if you can smell things coming out of the fireplace, then the flue isn't clean and the smoke and soot is coming into your house and not out the chimney.

Good point. I can't smell anything from the fire right now, I was just hoping to add something.

I did buy some cinnamon sticks and placed them in vases in the living room. That did the trick.
