Recommend your Vacuum

I'm looking for a new one. A good one. We have tons of dog hair. All of our floors are hard surfaces though we do have area rugs.

Do you have a vacuum that you love. My ILs are going to get us one for Christmas and I'm supposed to check them out and see if I can get a good deal on BF.

TIA!

Re: Recommend your Vacuum

  • I have the Dyson Animal.  And I do love that it gets the dog hair, but I'm not fond of the wand extension.  In order to use the wand/attachments, I have to have all the cord unwrapped to be able to get the wand off the unit.

This is a pain in the butt if I just need it to vaccum crumbs quickly.

Other than that I'm happy with my Dyson, but, if/when it comes time for a new one, I'm thinking Oreck.

  • I despise my dyson. Hate it with a passion. It only has 2been settings: carpet or bare floor. One area rug is shag-like and it is so hard yo push the vacuum across. And it just is awful on area rugs to begin with. It thinks it is sucking the rug up and makes this god awful noise and scares me and ty to death. He runs when I get the machine out. I could go on and on. Yes, it does suck dirt up, but there are so many other issues it doesn't make up for the dirt sucking power!
  • I have a dyson slim, I don't think they make it anymore, but I love that thing, it works great on bare floor and carpet and it really sucks up all the cat hair and my hair.  When I get another one it will be a Dyson animal, they are worth every cent.

  • Well, I have the Dyson Animal and while I loved it in the beginning (we got it as a wedding gift from my family), it is not great on hardwood floors.

We are considering the dyson multifloor (they have them on sale @ Target and Lowe's for BF) but honestly, I really don't think it is worth the $$

We have a mini powercyclonic vac from Dirt Devil and we really love it. It picks up the cat hairs no problem.

  • We have a Dyson (DC25 I believe) - it's considered an all-floors type and I love it.  Works really well on our carpets and hardwoods.

  • I have the dyson animal and it does a great job at sucking up the dog hair. I haven't had any issues with it losing suction. I do have to be careful about area rugs, some it vacuums fine, but others creates the terrible noise that Mary mentioned. But I miss that our old vacuum fluffed up the carpet better. So while the dyson does great at sucking up dirt and dog hair I miss having the nice fluffy vacuumed looking carpet.

I think it transitions great from carpet to hardwoods. It is way easier to vacuum our kitchen then it is break out the broom.

  • Thanks ladies. I was leaning towards the dyson animal so it is good t hear reviews
  • I think I have the same Dyson as Kara... the only thing I can't stand is the stairs. I wish it was easier to vacuum that with... (I really shouldn't even give advice since I think I've vacuumed oh like5 times since we bought it 3 yrs ago... DH uses it mostly). It's a 1000x better than the dirt devil piece o'crap we had before this.

  • I have a Dyson Animal and live it. We use it on carpets and linoleum with no issues. It's a million times better than my Oreck ever was. The only other brand I'd consider is a Kirby, but they are pricey and in home sales only.

  • we also have a dyson - the model right before the ball, I think the DS 24 or something that they don't make anymore. I love it. It is tricky on area rugs that are smaller like Mary said, but I feel like it really gets things clean and I find the wand extension great for cleaning stairs b/c I can leave the canister at the bottom of the stairs and it reaches all the way to the top - super easy.

also, this is the ONLY vacuum I've ever had where the spinny bar thingy didn't get wrapped in my hair and seize up after like a year. In fact, I've never had to even go after that bar thingy with scissors to remove my hair, which I always had to do with old vaccums.

As an aside, my mom LOVES her Oreck (Orek?) upright.

  • We are another Dyson Animal family here. We have the silver one with purple trim, not a ball one. It was a gift at our wedding shower. It is amazing how much fur it sucks up. Our entire condo is carpet, so I can't vouch for how it is on hardwoods, but it does fantastic on the carpet :)

  • Paige, I was flipping through BF ads on-line and it looks like Costco will have the DC25 animal (ball version) for $100 off normal price.

I have the ball and love how easy it is to maneuver.

I use one of the attachments to do the stairs (not sure what you do) and I think it's so much easier!

And ours is a ball one too like others have mentioned - I LOVE IT

Hmmm...seems like the ball one is the way to go. I might have to convince DH to upgrade. The one we have is not the ball one.
