I bought a Shark Navigator and love it. We have mostly carpet and some tile floors and it works great on both. It works nicely on our 18 stairs too. I picked up ours at Costco but I know I have seen them at Target as well. I think I paid about $150 for it.
I will admit that I bought it because of the price and it was purple.
I really like my Kenmore Canister Vac.
If you go to the store, sometimes you can find a return (gently used) for super cheap.
