Super Sad

No Egypt for us tomorrow.  Even though security at the Embassy in Cairo assured us that we would probably be fine if we stayed away from Tahrir Square and the surrounding areas, we don't want to take any chances.

Re: Super Sad

  • Well, if it makes you feel any better no Egypt for me tomorrow either.

But that sucks :(  Hopefully you can reschedule your trip in the future.

Are you sure, Kathy?  I hear they're having a pretty awesome party in Cairo tonight.  ;-)

Seriously, though.  This was a tough decision to make.  If we hadn't been planning to take the kids with us, we probably still would have gone.  Embassy security even gave us the green light and said they thought we'd most likely be fine, but we don't want to be totally reckless and stupid and ignore the risks.  I couldn't live with myself if I took an unnecessary risk and the kids were hurt.  With the elections just 6 days away, it's unlikely that things are going to calm down in the near future.

Unfortunately, because our flights haven't been cancelled by the airline and we haven't been forbidden from going, we don't know if we're going to get any of our money back.

  • That sucks. :( I think you're being smart about it, but it still sucks. :( Can you guys figure out something else fun to do locally to sort of ease the pain a little bit?

Selfishly, I am of course bummed that this means no blog posts about Egypt coming up. I was looking forward to hearing about your trip!

The part about finding something else fun to do locally, almost made me laugh out loud.  Ah, Saudi Arabia, you veritable fun-land. ;-)  We have briefly contemplated driving to Qatar for two nights.  We'll see.

You're very sweet, Mrs.MEW.  I was very much looking forward to blogging about Egypt too.  I bought a wide angle lens for my camera and had all of these plans about the awesome pictures I was going to take.  So disappointing.

Oh yeah, how do you like your lens?  Ever since you lens post I have been itching to get a wide angle lens now, LOL.  But we are oh-so broke right now (in the middle of a home renovation) and a new lens just isn't in the budget :(

I totally need to check out your blog.  I haven't had energy to browse the internet these days, but I also did enjoy reading your blog.........and your's too Mrs.MEW!

Again, that sucks. Also, you made me chuckle re: Saudi Arabia being a "fun-land." I have to admit I don't picture it being super fun, but then again, I guess I just find all your posts about it so interesting that I got confused. :) I hope you guys have a nice holiday even if it's not the one you imagined! Hopefully you can get to Egypt another time.

    Also, thanks, Kathy. :)

  • I'm so bummed for you. I know that your Egypt trip was helping to make up for being away from all your family over Thanksgiving. I do understand not wanting to put your children in any possibly dangerous situation. At the risk of sounding completely ignorant, what is the situation in Egypt that is keeping you away? I, too often, live in a Tasha-bubble and don't keep up with the world's current events.

Elections are supposed to start in Egypt on Monday (Nov. 28th).  In the last week, protestors have once again descended on Tahrir Square in Cairo to express their concerns about how long it is taking for transition to take place.  There are also people concerned about how the new constitution is being draft because there are rumors that the new constitution will shield military spending from any form of public oversight.

On the one hand, the protests and violence surrounding them has been limited to the area around Tahrir Square and the State Department has families stationed in Cairo still too.  On the other hand, even if we are unlikely to get caught up in the protests (since we can avoid those areas), there is likely to be a bit of a vacuum when it comes to police force in other areas of Cairo because their attention is diverted toward the protests.
