I've got a friend's baby shower in Jan and I volunteered to take care of the decorations.
I don't think I need to go TOO theme-specific on the decor, the theme exists more for keeping a cohesive look with multiple hostesses. For example, another friend is designing the invites and paper games, so the theme keep us from having random clashing elements.
Since the mom-to-be is registering on Amazon, she's including children's books in her registry, so the storybook thing just made sense.
Ok, so back to the decor.
(1) I'm thinking about setting up an area with baskets and a sign that says "Baby''s Library" where people can display the books they bring. The friend who is designing the invites, will also design little bookmarks that say something like "Baby's Library Book lovingly given by _______" so guests can fill out and insert in the book before putting it in the *library*/basket.
(2) There will be 4 big round tables outside (by the screened-in pool) with green tablecloths, where guests will eat; it's a Saturday brunch, if that makes a difference. I was thinking 1 basket with simple pretty flowery plants from The Home Depot on each of the 4 tables. Maybe tie a nice ribbon around each basket. I was also thinking that these baskets could double as game prizes too. Again, the baskets/plants aren't storybook-ish, but they ARE outside-in-Jan-ish. It's South Florida, so we don't have a real winter.
I don't plan on putting the CPs together until the week leading up the shower, but I wanted to have a vision so that I can pick out baskets I might find during holiday sales in the next couple of months.
Anyone have any alternate ideas/suggetions? Thanks!
Re: CPs for a storybook themed shower?
1. I am not a fan of the book thing so take this for what it is. I like the bookmark idea and the display. Be prepared for something to say if there are doubles or someone doesn't participate.
2. Make sure that the size of the basket is big enough for the tables. My last attempt at centerpieces fell a little flat because the tables were so large they swallowed up the vases. If you don't want to make big baskets think of how you can fill out the table- candies (wrapped), small books mock ups of books.
To tie in the theme you could try to find paper or ribbons that fit the theme. Wrap the baskets with the ribbon or stuff some of the paper into the basket. You could also make little flags to stick in the baskets that have storybook names.
Lastly, even though you didn't ask, consider the guests. If they are over 40 I'd try to suggest the mom do even a small brick and mortar registry. Even my sister, at, 41 is not a fan of ordering on Amazon.
Just keeping with the storybook theme....
Maybe have a white paper runner down the middle of each table and use markers to write titles of famous storybooks, or lines from storybooks ("I do not like them, Sam I am!", "And they all lived happily ever after", "No more monkeys jumping on the bed!") And/or, provide markers and have guests decorate the banner with words or pictures from storybooks. Might help pass the time while the guest of honor opens baby presents.
