Hostess gift

Do you ever/always take a hostess gift?

We have a neighborhood Christmas party and just wondering if I should think ahead.

But this neighborhood has about 4 parties and monthly luncheons every year.

Re: Hostess gift

  • Yes, I always take the host something little.  It depends on who it is & what event we're there for, but it can be anything from a potted plant, bottle of wine, chocolates, Christmas decor (I have a friend who loves snowmen, so I always pick up something snowman-themed for her at Christmas time), etc.

Depending on how well you know the person & how well you know their tastes, you can be more creative.  If it's just someone you are just meeting or don't know what they'd like, it's best to stick with general items like candles, food/wine, etc.

  • I never arrive at  party empty handed. I think it's appropriate when someone is making an effort to ensure everyone has a nice time.  Kind of like a pre-emptive thank you.

  • Our group of friends typically bring something to share that night - ie, an appetizer. If the hostess is handling all of the refreshments, then yes I bring a hostess gift. Like PPs I never arrive empty handed to a gathering.

  • I always bring at least food or a bottle of wine...

This exactly. I generally bring something edible (or drinkable) whether it's home made cookies, chocolates or wine... it's pretty easy to find versatile, affordable things. This time of year I stock up on hostess-type gifts so that I'm prepared for all the parties!

  • I never arrive empty handed either!  It really just depends who the host is, how well I know them etc
