QOTD Tuesday (thanksgiving foods you can do without)

I think we've talked about our favorite traditional Thanksgiving foods, so what is your least favorite? I know there are a lot of pumpkin pie haters out there!

Re: QOTD Tuesday (thanksgiving foods you can do without)

  • Mine is traditional green bean casserole. I like green beans, but I'm not really a fan of the casserole with the cream of mushroom soup and onions on top.

I also don't understand sweet potato casserole with marshmallows on top. I don't hate it, but it's just bizarre.

  • i can do without the mashed potatoes which seem to be a staple for others.  and any other bread too.  i will make mashed potatoes at other points during the year, so for me, the t-day carbs of choice are stuffing/dressing & sweet potatoes (I sometimes bake or make sweet potato fries during the rest of the year but i don't usually do whipped or maple-roasted, which our the 2 contenders for this year's feast)

Also?  I can do without all the pies.  I don't like crust, so I usually choose a crustless dessert or discretely scoop the apple pie filling out & eat it with ice cream.

i've got a nigella lawson cookbook that has a recipe for this in it & she's all "Yes, I know this sounds completely disgusting.  I thought so too when my American friend had me round for Thanksgiving.  But it's divine!"  (paraphrased)

it's kind of funny seeing a non-American's take on some "traditional" American food...especially food that people tend to be passionate about (since they only get it 1x/year)

  • Sweet potatoes.  I'm not a fan of the tradtional marshmallow topped casserole or even just mashed.  They are stringy to me, no matter what.  I only like them in french fry form.

Also, one side of my family makes stuffing using ritz crackers.  It ends up being one big pile of mush.

  • I can definitely do without pumpkin pie.  I'm not a hater, but I just don't love it.  I think it's the consistency.

I can also do without any additional bread, as pp mentioned.  Every menu I see includes rolls or bread of some kind, but I just feel like that's overkill with all of the other carbs - masked potatoes, sweet potatoes, stuffing... do I really need to have rolls too?  I don't feel like they will fit on my table with all the other food.  Someone tell me I don't have to do rolls, please....

  • I don't love the pie, or the stuffing. Or even, frankly, the turkey, once I've pulled all the crispy delicious skin off and eaten that. I don't like the green bean thing, either; I've finally gotten away from "having to" serve it by offering better sides (like, crazy as it sounds -- fresh green beans!). My former MIL used to love to make a Jello mold. Which no one ate, but she faithfully made one every year (even when I told her I didn't have a Jello mold, she managed to make one). John likes cole slaw (WTH?) with his turkey.

What I really like (which is not what you asked) is experimenting with new sides and appetizers. Bc after cooking all day, I really can't eat the plate o' food.

  • Turkey

    Sweet potatoes

    Green Beans

    Pumpkin Pie

  • I honestly don't care for turkey. Traditional roast turkey is so flavorless and boring (and yes, I've had a brined free range bird basted with riesling yadda yadda. Still blah). I take a little sliver of dark meat to be polite and pile my plate with stuffing instead. Last year we hosted and had prime rib and it was divine.
  • the turkey! Surprise

    I'd rather just have side-dish-a-palooza.

And, don't tell MIL, but the ILs like blueberry pie on T-giving, which just screams July 4 and summer to me... even though I love blueberry pie.

  • Green bean casserole. Uggh!

I've also never used cranberry sauce. I have no idea what you are even supposed to do with it.

Hahaha! My grandmother simply can't make turkey without making cole slaw. That is a completely traditional side in my family and I only recently realized how weird it is. She also makes sauerkraut. Nothing says Thanksgiving like cabbage and cabbage!

  • my MIL serves the same tired dishes no matter the holiday. and all of it is nasty. so i'm going to blanketly say - EVERYTHING at her house!

at my family's dinners, i like pretty much everything. we don't make an abundance of pies, there is no green bean casserole, the sweet potatoes are blended with mandarin oranges and clove (soooooo good), no marshmallows, the mac n cheese is homemade and baked goodness and the turkey is fried (none of us prefer roasted over fried), the gravy is perfect and the oyster stuffing is to die for.

OMG, this was a bad idea to think about before breakfast!

  • Pumpkin pie, cranberry sauce, green bean casseroles,... pretty much everything but the stuffing, turkey and mashed potatoes.
  • my MIL's corn pudding.  I swear she uses 2x corn than she should. So dry.

In her defense she does make a killer sweet potato casserole topped with some pecan prailine topping that I plan on devouring.

Ha - our friend who is having us over for Thanksgiving always serves pork and sauerkraut in addition to turkey. So strange!

  • Pumpkin pie, definitely (although there's a meringue version on Pinterest that looks appealing). Sweet potatoes with marshmallows, too--that was never a big one in our house, but we're having it this year. I love sweet potatoes in other forms but that is too sweet for me.

  • I hate stuffing/ dressing.  So gross.  I don't even make it.

I also don't like pumpkin pie, but I make it for H.

Same with sweet potato casserole with marshmallows.  Just not my thing.

  • Sweet potatoes, in any form.  I think they're gross.

Up until a couple years ago I could do without cranberry sauce, but I started making it different than how my aunt did, and it's 500,000 times better.

  • I could do without the turkey and the stuffing.  Just give me the sides - mashed potato, sweet potato casserole and chessy veggies.
  • Pickled herring

    Oyster stuffing

    Sour cream mashed potatoes

    Sweet pickles

    Cranberry JELL-O salad

Watergate salad -- pistachio pudding, cool whip, pineapple

    1. Anything sweet potatoey/yamy
    2. Stuffing - it's ok but nothing I miss
    3. pumpkin anything - since dinners at my place I made the menu and realized I totally omitted pumpkin pie - so am making some lame pumpkin dip to make up for it.

  • Mashed potatoes.  I like them, but as a PP said, I make them at other times during the year and on TG I'd soooo much rather have stuffing.  Usually I like everything else at my parents' house, but this will be our first TG at the ILs and who knows what kinds of weird things MIL will make.  Sad

Haha! I have nothing against oyster stuffing, personally. I was just impressed with that list of side dishes from a bygone era.

  • I like most Thanksgiving food, but plain green beans or peas are yucky!

Also, if your mashed potatoes or stuffing comes from a box, it's definitely not as good as the real thing.

  • Stuffing...handsdown. We don't really do mashed potatoes either. Not that I don't like them, they just aren't apart of our Thanksgiving staple menu.
  • Yams. I've grown to like them a bit, but I never take seconds.

I love all of the carbs at Thanksgiving dinner, rolls included! Stick out tongue

  • I'm not a fan of gravy....and I agree, if I had to get rid of something, it would be the turkey!
