It's that time of year again... (insurance question)
Is out of pocket max the very most you will pay out of pocket during an insurance year?
Let's say the OOP max is $5,000. And lets say I get diagnosed with cancer next year (or whatever.)
Does the OOP max of $5,000 mean that the most I will pay in 2012 regardless of surgeries and treatments and appointments I have is $5,000?
(I know I've said this a million times, but I HATE this stuff!!!)
Re: It's that time of year again... (insurance question)
I believe that is correct. Sometimes your OOP will apply to the entire plan--so if one person gets a cancer dx and you spend $5K oop on that family member covered by your plan and then another family member breaks an arm, the oop max has been reached so your normal copays wouldn't apply to the broken arm. Check the terms of the plan because some oop maxes are based on each person and some are per family.
Also, some oop expenses don't go towards the oop max (wellness visit copays sometimes fall into these categories or sometimes ER copays), so that's something to look at as well.
Thanks.
H's health insurance really sucks. But I'm thankful he has a job and health insurance. Still, yucky.
