I know this isnt the H&F board but this is my favorite so Im asking you guys... For any of you that run, are runners, know runners etc; Do you think that its inevitable to have bad knees when you get older? I was just thinking about this on my run the other day.. and I know its a ton of pressure on your knees and joints... If I continue to run for years, will I have craptastic knees when I get oldeR? Let me know what you guys think! Please
Re: Runners..
It's a pretty common misconception about running. As long as you keep your quads and hamstrings strong with weight training, your knees shouldn't suffer.
It really depends on the cause of your pain. I have arthritis, so lifting, while painful at times, is still good for my joint function. If the pain is from some sort of inflammation though, you'd want to rest.
Honestly, I think running is probably WAY better for your knees that being sedentary. It helps you keep your weight down, which can help significantly reduce daily wear and tear on cartilege. My dad was overweight for his entire adult life (and sedentary!) and just had his first knee replacement at the age of 62. That's really young to need new knees, and this is all because he was 30 pounds overweight for 40 years. So, yeah, I'll take running any day:-)
