Diabetic Retinopathy plus some T&P's

It's a long story, and one I'm still trying to sort out, but apparently my mom's husband is blind. He woke up a week or so ago completely unable to see. I have known he is diabetic and they were having a hard time controlling his sugar, and I have known that he's had vision problems. But I didn't know it was this bad.

My mom is completely freaking out (understandably so) and I have no idea what to do to help her. I was taken completely by surprise when she told me, and she was a smidge past hysterical when I talked to her so I didn't get a lot of information from her.

Does anyone know of any resources for him or her, information for any of us etc? He's (obviously) devastated and doesn't know what to do. Up until a week ago he'd spend 90% of his time working on the computer or with his long and short wave radios and is left with nothing to do but sit and worry and think about it.

Lastly, if you have any t&p's to send to them I would really appreciate it. I'm closer than I was, but still almost 3 hours away, so I can't help on a daily basis. I have a 13 yr old step brother that I'm sure is struggling to deal with it, and I'm not exactly sure what to do or where to go from here.

Thanks!
