Hot Topic: Hospitals

Everytime this topic gets posted there are lots of opinions so I want them again.  I am fortunate to have insurance that allows me a lot of freedom in choosing doctors and hospitals.  Right now I am with a doctor that delivers at Toledo Hospital, but I don't like the practice, it is way too big for me, I felt like I was just another woman on the assembly line when I was there. I am thinking of switching to a doc that delivers at St. V's.  Those are really my only two options because we've had multiple NICU babies in our family and I want to be a hospital that has one if we need it.  Everyone in my family has delivered at Toledo, so I have no St. V's experiences.  Anyone who has delivered there please share your pros and cons.

Re: Hot Topic: Hospitals

  • I loved St. Vs, everyone was very nice and helpful. They use the band system for their babies so that is nice. and most of their rooms are private. I cant tell you much about the labor department as I didnt labor very long with Monk and never labored with Harry, but the rooms are decent.  I also never used the NICU, but I know a few NICU nurses who work over there now and they are awesome. The only thing I can say in a not so nice way about Vs is that their food service peopleare sometimes not that friendly IMO.

  • I delivered twice at St. V's and I had good experiences both times.  The nurses were fantastic, though it is a teaching hospital so be prepared to answer whether you want students present and/or working on you, they ask first of course and you can say no.

I was asked if a student nurse could put in my IV and I told him he had one chance lol... he screwed it up and hurt me pretty bad so I asked the teaching nurse to take over.  I also had a couple extra hands up there checking things throughout, but at that point you really don't care what's going on or who sees what.

Epidurals were okay, they didn't let anyone stay with me so I had to hang on to the nurse, who was awesome.

Post-delivery you have time for some skin-to-skin and nursing after they clean baby up a little and do their measuring.  Then you are moved to your permanent room (at least in 2005 and 2007), while they bathe baby and then they'll bring her to you.  They're great about keeping baby in the nursery until it's time to nurse so you can get rest.  I took advantage of that with both because they can cough up amniotic fluid for a while and I was terrified they'd forget to turn their heads and choke on it while I was sleeping.

I stayed 2 nights with DD and only 22 hours with DS because it was such a great delivery. I didn't leave my room at all for either, but you can walk the floor.

  • I have no review of St. Vs for you because I delivered at Flower.

But I'm pretty sure I know which practice you are going to and don't like, I didn't like them either and felt like just another cow to milk, I also had some other issues with the doctor I was seeing so I switched to a group of only 2 doctors, both females, that only deliver at Flower.  Switching was the best thing I ever did for myself.

    Good Luck!!!!!!

  • I delivered at Toledo Hospital.  I also think I know the group you are speakin g of but my water broke early at 32 weeks and while I was on bedrest there at the hopital I saw everyone in the group and there was only one doctor I didnt like.  Everyone else treated me like I was very important.  They all (except for one) sat down talked to me everyday and helped my anxiety with my early arrive of my LO.

I also work at Toledo Hospital and I speak very highly of the L&D nurses as well as the post-partum nurses as well.

My son was born 7 weeks early and spent 16 days in the NICU..  I can not tell you how awesome the staff, facility, and supprt in the NICU was.  I could not imagine having my child anywhere but Toledo Hospital because of the NICU experience

  • Just to be clear, I am not anti-Toledo Hospital at all.  In the last year my sister, cousin, and a family friend all had babies that were in the NICU and they were all taken care of wonderfully.  I also don't hate the large practice I went to, I think they probably know their stuff, it just wasn't the right fit for me.  I think a smaller practice is what I need, the small practice I chose just happens to be a Mercy practice which I have no experience with.

Thanks to everyone who offered opinions and ideas, they are always appreciated!
