Silhouette Materials Question

Thanks to the post below I am buying the Silhouette Cameo. My question is what should I buy to go with it? Where do you buy your materials from?

Re: Silhouette Materials Question

  • What is it that you want to cut? I only have the supplies that came with my machine and I have had it for about 9 months. I buy scrapbook paper, vinyl and heat-n-bond (to cut fabric) at craft stores like Hobby Lobby, Michaels and Jo-Ann.
Warning No formatter is installed for the format bbhtml
  • I've bought vinyl from ohmycrafts by the sheet rolls from Hobby Lobby with coupons, cardstock and scrapbook paper from Hobby Lobby and Michaels. For t-shirts, I use freezer paper for stencils which I buy from the grocery store.

    What are you looking for?

  • So you don't have to buy the actual silhouette brand? I would like to make cards, labels to start. But I really don't know all the possibilities.

No, you definitely do not need to buy their brand. I use Tulip brand fabric paint (usually between $1 and $1.50 a bottle at craft stores) for most of my shirts, and I think the only Silhouette brand products I've actually bought have been the heat transfer vinyl.

  • Good to know. I will probably have to find some tutorials on how you can use it all. How do you make things with paint?

I am ordering my machine right now and I was looking for materials on ohmycrafts.com.

Do you know if Michael's has adhesive backed cardstock?

  • Do you know if Michael's has adhesive backed cardstock?

I don't know for 100% positive if Michaels has it, but they probably do. I got a ton of cricut/ post it branded adhesive backed cardstock @ jo-ann's this summer. If you have one of those xyron machines, you can make any cardstock adhesive backed. (that's what we did when I went to the silhouette workshop @ the paper source)

  • For shirts, I mostly use freezer paper stencils. You can buy freezer paper at most grocery stores in the aisle with saran wrap and aluminum foil. Sometimes you don't get the cleanest lines as some of the paint may bleed through, but it works well. Here is a good tutorial I've found:

I've also used vinyl for stencils when I'm doing a more intricate design as the freezer paper can sometimes tear as it is being cut. It takes some practice to figure out the best settings and what works best for you.
