Age for charm bracelet?

I want to get my niece a charm bracelet for Christmas, a nice one from James Avery that we can add to for years. She will be 7 in January. DH thinks she is too young, but I don't see it as something she necessarily starts wearing now, but we can get her new charms every year or when we travel or for milestones.

WDYT? Too young? Just right?

Re: Age for charm bracelet?

  • Check with her mom, but IMO seven is probably a good age. She'll be thrilled to open your present. Children can be meticulous if they want to be. My own 5yo has done surprisingly well keeping up with an inexpensive necklace she received for her birthday this summer. If you can, make sure the bracelet fits her wrist well, that it won't slip off easily, and can expand as she gets older. I'm sure you've already thought of that though.

Me too. I was in second grade. It was the same year I got my ears pierced.

  • I think it's a great gift and acceptable for a 7 year old.
  • I think it's a great gift for a 7 year old.  I bought all (6) of my nieces JA charm bracelets around that age (some a little younger, some a little older) and they all did very well with them.  We actually bought one as a first birthday gift for a close friend's child a few months ago.  Of course, she won't be able to wear it for quite some time, but we'll continue to add to it every year.  I think it's a really sweet gift.

  • Claire got hers at 8.  : ( I have no idea where it is now.
  • It seems a little young.  But i am kind of comparing to my niece that just turned 6 - maybe a year makes a difference.  i could see her (my niece) losing it very easily - but she can be a little scatterbrained.

My older niece will be 10 in Feb., and I think it would be something cute for her, and something she could be responsible for and would like receiving charms for.  I think i got mine around 4th? or 6th? grade - somewhere in there.  I didn't wear it much, but loved getting charms for it - especially something that related to that year.  I still have mine...somewhere...

  • Tracey got one shortly after she was born from a family friend with a few meaningful charms already on it. Obviously she does not wear it yet but my mom gets her charms at Christmas.

  • I don't think elementary school aged girls are responsible enough to keep track of jewelry, and if it's something she's meant to put away and save until she's older, she'll be disappointed that she can't wear/use/show it off right then.  I'd wait on it.

FTR, I didn't know anyone with a JA charm bracelet until jr. high.
