How Late Can I Plant?
We live in Iowa ... with a 5 zone. The daytime temps are in mid 40s and nighttime mid 20s.
We are building a home and the hardscape (beds) have all been put in with nice soil and mulch. We are doing the plantings ourselves (I've been working for months on designing the multiple beds).
I was planning to wait until spring to plant but am starting to get a planting itch.
Is it too late to plant some of the foundation shrubs/evergreens?

You can plant anytime the ground can be dug. Once the ground is frozen you're out of luck; you have to wait for spring.
Keep in mind that the nursery industry is seaonal, and the plants you want may not be available when you want them... most of the time, they have to be "in season".
If you have a boutique nursery nearby this might actually be a good time to buy, especially for perennials. They like to get rid of stock that's done blooming or died down for the winter quickly. I got a handful of harder to find perennials (special hostas and anemones) and some groundcovers for half price. Sure, I'm looking at a bare pot right now, but it's from a nursery I trust.
