Gas leak warning!!!

Just wanted to share my story, and hopefully it might help someone else.

I had friends whom stayed with us about 6 months ago and used our guest bedroom. They had commented it smelled like gas in that room. DH and I could not smell it, so we didn't worry about it. Then about 2 weeks ago, my BIL was checking on our dog while we were out of town, and he also said it smelled like gas. I thought to myself to call the gas co when we got home, but it slipped my mind. The other day my mum told me that my aunt had been told by friends it smelled like gas in her home, but she could not smell it. She then called the gas company and they found a leak which could have blown up her house!

After hearing her story, I had the gas co out on fri, and yup, we have a gas leak in the attic. The gas guy said we were really lucky since it could have caused a fire! I am just so thankfully nothing bad happened.

I think we may have had a leak since we moved in (3 years). We bought new construction and were told before we moved in there was a gas leak, but it was supposed to be fixed. The gas guy said the leak was from faulty instillation. I am so mad to think how much danger the crappy builder put us in, and for me for not listening to my friends 6 months ago!

Re: Gas leak warning!!!

  • OMG!  How scary!  I'm so glad you had someone check it out and that it's ok now.
  • So glad you called & got it fixed.
  • OMG.  Glad the problem was fixed.
  • Scary!! OMG, I am so glad you called them.
  • Wow so glad you guys caught it before anything horrible could happen!
  • The same thing happened to me!! I was 8 months pregnant, and I kept smelling gas in our bedroom, but not consistently and DH never smelled it. I thought maybe cuz my senses were heightened, I wasn't really smelling gas, but something else, ya know? Anywho, a few weeks later, my pool man told me that he smells gas on the side of my house (next to my bedroom) and after calling the Gas Co, they found that the gas line to our pool heater was leaking underneath the ground, so they turned off that connection since we never use our pool heater. After that, I purchased a Gas detector alarm, which goes off if it detects dangerous levels of carbon monozide (which you can't see, smell or taste!) & explosive gas. I HIGHLY suggest getting one, I think ours cost about $70, but to me it's soooo worth it!!!

    Glad you guys are ok!!!!!

  • So scary.  Glad everything was ok!

We had a gas leak, and the Gas Company employee who came out said that any time a woman calls to tell them they smell gas, they take it very seriously.

Men are not as sensitive as women are.  DH never smelled it at all.

  • So glad to hear that nothing more serious happened.?

Having a new house doesn't really shield us from all the other dangers we think only happen in old construction.?

A Carbon Monoxide detector sounds like an excellent idea.
