Sister Wives

Has watching the show made you change your view of the Browns & polygamists that you had when it was first being advertised?

Re: Sister Wives

  • I think I'm less judgmental about the whole thing. I'm watching the season finale tonight. I haven't been watching it too much lately but I find it fascinating.

  • I was okay with them before and I'm just as okay with them now. I get sad when they say they are jealous of xx wife or whatever. I'm sad they have jealousy at all and I'm really sadthey all live farther apart from each other.

  • I didn't care about their lifestyle one way or the other but I like to watch the show. I was bawling during the season finale, birth stories do that to me. But the last 5 min killed me! I never really cared for Robyn until right then.
  • I still don't agree with with it, but I do like them as people. (Except Kody, I just can't stand him) I think the wives seem sincere and really do care about each other...although I will say sometimes I do get the feeling there's a lot of jealously on Christine's side, and resentment from Janelle.
  • I was pretty defensive of polygamy before, but these people suck so much that it's made me question my stance.  Kind of like 16 and pregnant makes me question my stance that everyone should have a right to breed.

  • Kody completely grosses me out still. I haven't really liked the relationships between the wives during the entire season, until tonight's episode. None of them seemed happy & neither did the kids so it makes me wonder if they truly love the lifestyle. It almost seems like some of them were so desperate for a family they jumped on whatever they could at the moment. But, tonight's episode made them all seem really happy & one big loving family. I wonder if the stress of the investigation & move just showed them in a bad light.

I can't say that I'm 100% on board with polygamy yet, but they have definitely opened my eyes.

  • I always liked Big Love. Because I do not like Kody at all, I agree with Sibil.
I've seen a lot of military surprise homecomings. It wouldn't work on me. I always have my back to the corner and my face to the door. Looking for terrorists, criminals, various other threats, and husbands.
  • Um is anyone else kind of not understanding whey they didn't cut the cord until the placenta was delivered?

It's not uncommon, at least in my world. It allows the placenta to deliver the remaining vitamins & nutrients to the baby. We will do a 5 minute delayed cord clamping.

Does it have something to do with placenta eating?

Okay thank you for the clarification. I had no idea as I have not been that close to deliveries or have had a baby of my own.

It has to to with this.  The theory is that it's traumatic for LOs when they are separated from the umbilical cord when it's cut, and they loose blood that should be transferred from the placenta when it's cut directly after birth.

Same idea, but the Brown's didn't do a lotus birth. They just waited for the placenta to be delivered then clamped & cut immediately. It was like 10 minutes.

  • Also, I don't like Kody or necessarily agree wtih polygamy- but I do think it's a testimony to what they believe.  And good for them to sticking to their Faith and going against the grain for what they believe.

Agreed.  I think as long as everyone is a consenting adult then there's nothing wrong with it.  These kids all seem to be well cared for and loved...that's more than some kids get in a "traditional" family.

  • I'm watching the finale now.  WOW, I am really impressed with the love and support.  And her home birth.  She barely squinted.  She's tough.  Solomon really does seem to bring every one together.

That part actually really annoyed me.  Meri explicitly said she doesn't want to do IVF.  If someone is volunteering to be a surrogate ("parts from you and parts from Cody"), they should comprehend that it's basically IVFx2.  How else does she think the "parts" from Meri will get into her uterus?  Yeah, IVF.

I think she just wanted her to know it was an option.  She said she didn't want an answer, and it would take time to think about it, but it was an option that was available.

Interesting. Thank you for the link.

I feel the same. It's whatever as long as it's consenting adults and the kids are ok.

Yup. And my impression is that it isn't just the "getting pregnant" part it's also the "carrying" part that Meri struggles with. I just thought it was a selfless act on her part and obviously Meri felt very touched. That is the part that I liked, Meri understood what Robyn was offering. And Robyn may not have any idea that Meri turned away from IVF before.

This was just in the NY Times today!

    http://www.nytimes.com/2011/11/29/health/research/delay-in-clamping-umbilical-cord-has-benefits-months-later.html?_r=1

Basically, the study found waiting 3+ minutes to clamp the cord resulted in higher iron levels in the babies even four months later.  Babies who had it clamped within ten seconds were more likely to have iron deficiency.
