Hey ladies!
I'm looking into getting the Nook Tablet for my mom for xmas and was just wondering if anyone can offer an thoughts on it. My parents travel a lot for vacation and she always collects books from the library for the length of their stay, so I feel like this would be a good alternative to lugging all those books. My questions are:
Is there a good selection of free books avaialable?
Can you access any networking sights like Facebook on it? She communicates with her parents from the daycare while she away via FB so that is something I would looking into.
What other activities are available on it?
Do you like it? Is it easy to use?
Re: Does anyone have the Nook?
I have a regular nook and DH has the nook color (the older version of the tablet). We both like them. Devin managed to hack his nook color to hold kindle books and android apps, so I'm not totally sure what capabilities the original version has.
There aren't a whole lot of free books, unless you like the classics. There is a pretty good selection of cheap books (under $5) that rotates through pretty often. Don't quote me on this, but I'm pretty sure that librarys frequently have nook books that you can borrow.
You can access FB on it, but I rarely do, so I can't speak to how great it is. You do need a wifi connection for it. You can get apps like games and stuff, many of which are free. I think its very easy to use. If you go into a B&N store, they have them out that you can play around with.
The other thing I like about the nook is the "read in store" feature. Since we have a B&N around the corner, I go there and read sometimes, so I can read the book for free!
I have a Nook 2nd gen. I love having a Nook and not carrying books. I am not sure where your mom lives, but I recommend she get a library card to the Free Library of Philadelphia. You can do it online. If she lives in PA, it is free as long as she has another card. If she is out of state, there is a fee, maybe $35 a year. They have the largest selection!
One thing about getting library books for a Nook is there is usually a waiting list. So depending on what she likes to read, she may not have too many books available.
