How soon can you POAS?

Do you have to wait till the missed period?

Have any of y'all POAS too early, got a negative, and then got a positive after a missed perioed?

Cool

I totally POAS way too early, got a negative, but I'd like to think there is still hope.  My period isn't set to come until Dec. 9th.  I know, I know.  I just had to test after my "ovulation window."  I know I shouldn't have.

Re: How soon can you POAS?

  • December 9th?! I'm thinkin you jumped the gun there girl! Wink I really debated about POAS on Thanksgiving when I was due for my period the next day. I googled the crap out of when to POAS and a lot of sites said that even a day or so after missing your period it can come back negative when you really are PG.

The test was negative and I got my period a few hours later by the way. Kinda bittersweet- now I don't have to worry about the ToughMudder obstacles but I also don't have a good excuse not to go through the 10K Volt live wires at the end.

  • Do you know when you ovulated?

I always started testing way too early too.  If you period isn't supposed to be here until 12/9 then I would guess it is way too early unless your cycles are really long and you ovulate early.  I got my BFP's at 9 and 10 dpo's using Early response tests, but they were both really faint.

  • I don't know, I didn't POAS until I was 6 weeks, but I realllllly hope you just did it too early!!!  :)

  • With DD, I got a negative at 3 weeks. Then I restested a month later, when it seemed pretty obvious I had to be pregnant and got a positive.

  • I know.  I know.  I TOTALLY poas way too early.  But I'm just eager beaver.
  • Yes!  Fingers crossed you will be making an announcement soon :)

I POAS starting at 6 DPO (which is waaayyyy too early but I have control issues).  I didn't get a faint positive until 8 DPO, and even then first morning urine, didn't show a second line.  I tested two additional times later in the day at 8 DPO and got a FAINT BFP both times.  I tested the following morning with a digital and "not pregnant" showed up, but two lines did show up on the First Response brand test (but digital tests are not as sensitive as First Response brand tests).

Oh and not sure if you know this but the typical person starts their period at 14 DPO so it is totally possible for you to get a BFP days before your period is due.

Do you know when you ovulated?  Or is Dec 9th just your scheduled time for AF?  If your not sure when you ovulated, I would say the VERY earliest you could possibly get a BFP would be Dec 3rd, but even then it's probably not likely.  It all depends when the egg decides to implant (which is typically between 8 DPO to 10 DPO) and then it takes a day or two for the HCG hormone to be detected in your system by a HPT.

    Fingers crossed for you  :)

  • The earliest I ever got a BFP was 9 days.  With Kennedy it was 11 days, and this time there was a VERY faint line at 11dpo, and the more obvious line at 12dpo.  I had been POAS since 9dpo, so it's definitely possible to get a negative, then a positive, even when you aren't testing terribly early.  Keeping everything crossed for you!

  • I had both my positives at 11 DPO.  I tested no earlier than 10 DPO.

    Good luck!

  • Gals,

I have no clue what DPO means.  I don't do all that charting stuff.  Too much work.

I use the handy "times you should do it a LOT" calendar online and we went at it.  That was like last week.  HAAAAAAHHHAAAAAHAAAA.

So, okay, if my next scheduled period is Dec. 9th, I'll test again after that.

And yes, if you think I'm crazy, I am.  ;)

LOL, yes it makes no sense to people who don't chart... DPO= Days post ovulation. I generally O'd 14 days after my period. With Lila, I got a neg 8DPO and then a positive 10DPO.... So technically I got a positive test 24 days after the first day of my last period.

    DPO = days past ovulation

You aren't crazy at all!  I was an obsessive POAS'er.  At least order some cheap tests off Amazon so you don't go broke peeing on expensive sticks.  But definitely don't count yourself out over an early negative!  I always try to keep the mentality that it's not over until you period shows.  I know, easier said than done!

  • I *think* DPO means days post ovulation but I'm not 100% on that. Like you, I don't chart. I have a nifty app on my phone (My Days) that I input when I get my period and it spits out when my most fertile time is, when my predicted ovulation is and when my next predicted period is. You can note temps and it will track ovulation more accurately. You can also add notes like when you had sex (which put a purple dot on the calendar) or other misc notes (which put a blue dot on the calendar). I went ahead and put in all my races on the schedule. You know, priorities. Wink

    DPO = Days Past Ovulation

I didn't chart the month I got pregnant but I did remember when I had sex.  So I estimated that I ovulated on the day we had sex.  My theory of ovulation was confirmed when I had my ultrasound and the baby measured right on track with my estimated ovulation date.  I did indeed get my BFP at 8 DPO.

But if I had to do it all over again, I wouldn't chart.  Like you said, it's way too much work and caused too much stress for me.  I obsessed over everything, when in the end not charting is what did the trick for us!

    Ha. Priorities.

The problem with me is... next month I'll be out of town when I'm ovulating.  And probably January/February I'll be gone too.  This work travel is really getting in the way.  boo.

Think the ones I had were called Wondofo.  They're like 50 for $9.  Totally worth it.  And they are pretty sensitive too.

I have HUGE issues with H's travel schedule getting in the way, so I somewhat relate.  Hopefully this will be it for you and you don't have to worry about the next few months!

I also find that Answer tests are cheaper than FRER and about $5 less.

Hm, i haven't seen them. Will have to look. I was really hopeful this month bc I started spotting late, and it was so light, but alas - negative and period finally showed today. On to 2012!

  • I used the wondfo ones too. They also sell ovulation test strips that will tell you when you are going to ovulate. Those were really great for me because I had no idea that I ovulated late 19-20days after my period, so I would have missed my window every month!

  • Second the Wondfo tests.  I used those and got positives with my first.  I would have used them again, but I had used all of them up while we were trying, so I went and bought dollar store tests.

When you are in a pinch and don't have any internet cheapies, I suggest a run to the dollar tree and getting  few of those.  They work great too!

When I went to the dollar store, they were only blue dye tests. Are there others I missed?

  • I peed on a stick on a Monday...got a negative.  That same week on Friday I peed on a stick and got a positive!  And I had not "missed" my period either so yes you can pee too early but you don't have to miss one to get a postive either.

Pretty sure they were pink lines.  The brand is New Choice Pregnancy Tests.

And they came out correct with no false positives.  Did you go to the dollar tree or just a dollar store?

  • You can pee on a stick and get a false negative, but really not a false positive.  I am thinking you did it too soon!

  • Great info here.  Thanks.

I bought some cheapie sticks last night from Amazon so I can poas at my heart's content.  If this month we don't get a positive, I'll buy the ovulation strips and go from there.

  • Moonstone - I've got like 35 O strips I bought off of Amazon, which I don't need anymore.  I'd be happy to give them to you if you need.  Just let me know.
