Question about sewing curtains...

Well, I guess two questions...

1.  Does anyone have a good free online tutorial for sewing basic curtain panels.  I googled it but there are just so many to choose from that I thought a couple of recommendations would be a good starting point.

2.  What should I line the curtains with?  The curtains are for my daughter's room which has two windows that get sun during the middle of the day.  The room gets quite warm during this time everyday. I originally wanted to use room darkening material but it is costly.  I can get there are no other good options but I'm not sure what options there are.  I thought about plain white cotton material but I just don't think it will block ehough light.  So do I have any other options?

This is the fabric I want to use for the curtains.

Re: Question about sewing curtains...

  • There are a lot of different curtain lining fabrics available (at a variety of prices), and if you wait for a 40 or 50% off coupon or sale, the cost is not too bad.

I think using actual drapery lining fabrics works better, both for blocking light and for being durable and standing up to the sun that can damage the fabric.

My hint for curtain making is to cut off the selvedge before sewing.  A lot of people think that it is a nice finished edge and just fold it under and sew, but it is woven very tightly and will make the sides of the panel shorter than the middle, and it will never hang as nicely as a panel that has had the selvedge removed first.

  • That fabric you have picked looks very light weight so it won't help much for blocking light at all.  If you are wanting the curtains for blocking out light, I would suggest you use the lining fabric made to block light and just try to use a coupon or get it on sale.

If your pick a heavier curtain fabric that would block more light, you could probably get away with a lighter lining.

  • I agree that the fabric you chose is too light to block out much sun at all.

If you want to use it without lining, I'd buy cheaper blackout panels on Amazon (I waited for a sale paid $16 apiece for the ones that hang in my bedroom and each one is 50" x 84") and do a double rod, that way the cute fabric can be facing the room and you'll still be able to protect from sun/ heat.

  • Growing up we had roll-up blackout panels that fit inside the window frame, then curtains that were outside.  The curtains could be opened or closed separately from the window but were mostly decorative (they were heavier than sheers, but not lined).  this worked quite well.  You could do a sheer panel in addition to the fabric you have chosen so that the blackout panel is not so visible.
