What beer would you serve?

Hi:

We are having a Holiday Open House on Saturday night.  We don't drink beer.  What brands of beer would you buy for a party?  Or what do you like to drink if you are a beer drinker?  Can you help me with a recommendation for regular and a "lite" beer?

Thanks,

Kristen

Re: What beer would you serve?

  • I would get some basic Bud Lite or Milller Lite for the casual beer drinkers.  Maybe some Sam Adam's Winter Lager, Yuengling or another craft beer.  There are other Christmas ales available depending on what is in your area.
  • Depends on how much you need to buy and how much you want to spend.  I'd probably do a combo Sam Adam's Winter Lager- good and festive.  Blue Moon and Molson are also really good if you want to mix that in.  For lite beers I'd probably do Michelob lite, but Bud or Miller would be okay.
  • I think if you're having a party, craft beer are nicer than Bud or Miller Lite.

I would do a white beer - I think Sam Adam's has a nice winter white. And a nuttier dark ale would be good. If you go to your supermarket or liquor store, they should have all the seasonal beers that would be good up front. I would just get a variety - at least one light and one amber or dark.

Or do you want to do mini kegs you can keep in the fridge / patio table (right by your door)? More green and "fun"! Or are there local brewers who have growlers with seasonal brews you can serve?

  • Short answer: Go for a Bud or Miller Lite for casual drinkers and an artisan choice or two for those more serious about their beer.

Long answer: Beer is a pretty regional thing.  There are the big national guys - Coors, Bud, Miller - but once you get outside those, you get into regional availability and preference.  Molson that PP suggested is a Canadian beer and Yeungling is from Pennsylvania.  Both are hard to find the further away from their homes you get.  Sam Adams (Boston) and Michelob are available here, but I don't know anyone who drinks them.

If you plan on going out to eat some time before the party, scope out the bar and restaurant and see what people are drinking.  Blue Moon's made by Coors and should have good national availability, but you'll get bonus points from your guests for something local or regional.  Consider asking a bartender while you're out.

  • I think PPs had great answers - Bud or Miller for a lite beer... Sam Adams has great holiday options... but could you ask some of the guests what they prefer? It really does depend on your region. Molson is popular here in MI.. but we're near the border to Canada. Labatt's Blue, Blue Moon, Heineken, are all popular too. Good luck!

  • I always have Amstel light for people and it goes over well.  I'm not a beer drinker either and neither is my husband.
  • Thanks so much, everybody.  Our crowd is primarily wine and cocktail drinkers, but there are always a handful of guys who are beer drinkers.  I am in PA and in the past have done Yeungling, Sam Adams and Amstel Light, Micheloeb or Miller lite one year.  It is always so hard because every year people drink different things!  Thanks for your suggestions.  Very helpful.

  • Most of our friends and family drink Yuengling. We keep Coors Lite on hand for my mom, and there's usually some Miller Lite or Bud Light floating around for a few other friends.

And MH drinks craft beers, so he's always got different varieties on hand. If he's at someone else's house and crafts aren't available, he drinks Yuengling, Sierra Nevada or Sam Adams.
