Annoyed with the Nordstrom debit card

I applied for it in store, and was declined, so they sent me a letter and I called to find out why.  I have a credit score in in the 800s and plenty of money in the bank (I'm not trying to make it sound like I'm filthy rich, just pointing out that there is no reason I should have been denied this card).... so I really can't imagine why I was turned down for this.

The guy I spoke with says the decision is not contingent on credit (even though mine is stellar, and the agency he directed me to in order to receive my report says their function is to determine credit worthiness) - but they look at whether you keep a steady phone number or address.  My phone number has been the same since 2005, except it was placed on hold while I was in China last year, and my address history is insane because I've moved 6 times in 7 years as a military wife!  This really irritates me.

I just wanted to vent.

Re: Annoyed with the Nordstrom debit card

  • That's really crappy.  I'd be annoyed, too.
  • That sucks.  They're basically saying that as long as you live in the same place and have the same number for a while with crappy credit you can get a card.  Kinda back asswards.  I'd be irritated too, if I were you!
Always be yourself. Unless you suck.
  • I think the debit card has issues in general.  I applied for one a few months ago, since it's a debit card it's only linked to your checking and is supposed to have no restrictions.  I was denied multiple times by my bank (Citizens) and the bank said it's because no third parties were allowed to access my checking for security reasons. So fine, my credit union would do it no problem, they "opened" the debit card with that, made my purchases and was on my way.

Well I get home, check my bank account that had been "denied" and low and behold the charges had come out of the denied account!  I got my debit card in the mail about a week later.

The whole system is messed up and literally nobody knows anything about the debit card program.  I would be surprised if a card didn't show up in the mail in a few weeks.

  • I would be pissed to. I personally would not want any other account/credit card be linked to my bank account. The idea sounds great but I think if the acount information is compromised,  the risks are higher than a regular credit card.

you know, you are right, and I think it must be a blessing in disguise ;)  I'm really paranoid and I hardly ever use my debit card at all. One year my card was somehow duplicated and someone withdrew 7500 dollars from my bank account straight from an ATM, and I had my original card with me! I was in Florida at the same time using my card, while people were withdrawing money from an ATM using the same card in California. Bank of America FAIL!  We did get our money back, though.

  • Same thing happened to me today....pissed me off.
  • I was turned down for the debit card (blessing in disguise, by the way).  The report they used is from id:a, a little nothing consumer report company.  I ordered my report, which arrived today. You're supposed to figure out how to read it, and how to dispute stuff on it intuitively.  Frankly, if Nordy's bases their approvals and denials on this little crappy report, they don't need my business.

The company gives you the option of putting a security freeze on your personal information, which means they cannot send reports pertaining to your information to companies that request their services.

All it contains is names, addresses and phone numbers.  That's it.  What a load of crap.
  • Find that hard to believe. Bank of America has a ATM cash W/D limit and it's nowhere close to $7500/day. You can request to have it increased but number 1..you'd be an idiot to do so. #2 you either have to appear in person at the bank to request or sign in to your online banking using your log in information. Not so sure how they could've gotten that info just by duplicating your card. Hummm...
