RFOTD

Ditching the dollar bill for $1 coin would save the gov't $5.6B over 30 years.

Re: RFOTD

  • they just need to do what Canada did, remove paper dollars from circulation so all people can get is coins.  we'd stop complaining sooner or later.  I like the loonies and toonies in Canada.  I know a dollar used to be a lot of money so it made sense to have it as a paper bill, but now, it would make more sense to have them as coins.
  • Personally I would hate having a dollar coin instead of a bill. They've tried instituting it here so many times and it's always failed.  Yes, the U.S. is a PITA with always doing things differently than other countries, but I much prefer bills to coins.
I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball

  • We have dollar and two dollar coins here in NZ.  Yes, a bit more heavy if you collect change in your pockets or at the bottom of your purse, but it's fine with me.  In fact, I like it when I finally fish out all the coins from my bag and realize I have over 20 bucks in one and two dollar coins.

Our smallest coin is a 10 cent piece, and we do Swedish rounding, so if something is 5.04, it's rounded down to 5 bucks and if it's 5.06, then it's 5.10.  I don't like pennies :)

  • It didn't bother me in Europe when we lived there (before the Euro). In fact we lived so close to Switzerland but in France and not far from Italy either, that we always had multiple currencies in our wallets to keep track of. That was more annoying than coin dollar amounts. I don't know why it works abroad but not here. I know they have tried to institute it a few times. I think we're just too used to dollar bills at this point.
  • I love dollar coins.

I agree- they need to stop being an option and start being the norm. We need that $5.6B!
