What is your income?

I realize this is going to vary because of where everyone lives but I figured since we've skirted around the topic lately, why not?[Poll]

Re: What is your income?

  • Let's see who's as poor as me...

I'll tell y'all straight up that Guy and I jointly made a little over $50k in 2010. We live in an extremely low cost of living area.

We're not far off. We made about 55/60K last year. But we also live an extremely low cost area.

  • last year we barely broke through the $100K mark.  COL is kind of in the middle range here (higher than much of the midwest, but lower than the east coast).  My entire income essentially goes to our mortgage and our student loans though, so we definitely don't live a lifestyle that most would think based on our income.  It never feels like we make as much money as we do.

  • I just went to an all day training on adults being adopted. Will those in the 200K range adopt me and DH? We're fun, and we cook. He cleans.

Our rent + my loans= greater than my income, so it feels that way for us too.

  • We're just over the $100k mark, but living as close to Boston as we do in the town that we do, that means absolutely nothing compared to others in our area.

  • I believe we're on the high end of $70k....and living right outside of Boston with that income is really no bueno. I don't know how we make it work - but we do, just barely.

Nope, just a letter of reference.

  • We make about 85k combined. It sounds like a lot but I feel it should be more since I have a Master's degree and DH works too jobs. 2011 may be slightly less since I went on med leave and don't make overtime in my current position. Hopefully our incomes will increase if I can get a new job or promotion, and DH finishes school. My student loans aren't too bad, but it certainly would be nice not To have them. IMO our mortgage is insanely high because we bought at the worst time and can't sell or refinance.

  • I think we are mid 60's, but we live in a lower cost of living area. That could go up a good amount if Floyd gets the job he has an interview for on Friday. So any good vibes would be appreciated. He doesn't graduate until March but has friends in the IT department (job is at company currently working at) and they say he has a good chance!

Okay after that pathetic plee for vibes lol, I found this site while searching cost of living.

It's pretty interesting. I typed in a wage of $65,000 for Milwaukee and it translates to like $113,000 in Boston. It also said that Boston is 74% more expensive and housing is 212% more than Milwaukee! That's nuts!

  • Oops I answered the clicky part wrong, I didn't include DH. Combinded we make about $75-$80K depending on bonuses, overtime, etc. About 5 years ago, the jobs we had we were lucky to be making $30K combined so now we are making up for it by paying down all debt we racked up when we didn't have any money so it doesnt feel like we have any extra cash

I love to watch HGTV and prices in places like DC always shock me! With what you can get a huge house here, gets you a small condo there. It always boggles my mind.

Tell me about it.  Housing prices here have only "fallen" about 3%, which means they're still astronomical.

I told my husband when we looked at houses the first time here what we could buy in the places either of us grew up in for the same amount of money and it made both of us a little bit unhappy.

I always have to remind myself that salaries would change too.  If  you lived in Texas (versus Boston), your salary would likely be WAY less too.  The house you'd be able to buy probably wouldn't be that different if your salary changed with your location, you know?  LIke if we moved to some little podunk town tomorrow, I wouldn't be taking my salary with me, you know?

But yeah, we were watching one last night in like Nashville and I'm like "they're looking how how many bedrooms for HOW MUCH?!"

Yeah, that's acutally something Ames and I were talking about just now -- it's all relative when you think about it.  Unless, of course, you're like SIL's husband who was able to telecommute from Texas with a Boston salary.  Yeah.... it definitely helped them while she was in grad school.

Yeah...we considered moving to FL when I graduated from college. Doug talked to his boss about transfering to a FL location and he was told that his salary would also decrease based on the cost of living.  We didn't know if we'd ever want to move back home once we started a family and what not, so it would have screwed with his pay coming back home. They probably would have brought him back to the Boston area at a much lower rate, just because they could.

  • Cool site, Kel!

Boston is 74% more expensive than Bentonville, with housing 174% more expensive. Our $50k salary would translate into $87k in Boston.

Washington, DC is 52% more expensive, with housing 168% more expensive. $50k would translate to roughly $80k.

Denver, CO is 24% more expensive, with housing 62% more expensive. $50k converts to roughly $62k.

Harrisburg, PA is actually 1% cheaper than Bentonville, with housing 1% cheaper. So I'm taking that to mean it's about the same. $50k translates to $49k and change.

Milwaukee, WI is "essentially the same" as Bentonville. Both had overall indexes of 89.

It's very interesting indeed! It pretty much confirms what we've all been discussing.

  • We make about 95k combined. We're super lucky in the debt department, and the COL is relatively low here (much higher than other parts of the state, but much much lower than Boston, DC, etc.). The HGTV shows amaze me. We paid 140K for our house. If we could move it to LA, we could sell it for a million.
  • a little late but thought I would answer. H and I live in a high cost of living area and I don't work. H makes high 5 figures and get a once a yr bonus of anywhere from 20,000-60,000 depending on how well the stock market does. So with his bonus he is pretty well off. However with the cost of living in our area it doesn't go as far as you would think it would. I always wonder how ppl in our area make it work.

We live in a decent size 3 bedroom home yet ppl around us have these million dollar home and it makes me wonder where they get all their money from.

I always think of you, Michelle, when I watch the other areas of the country because I remember being amazed at how much you paid for your house vs. how much your house would be here in Boston. haha
