Re: What is your income?
Let's see who's as poor as me...
I'll tell y'all straight up that Guy and I jointly made a little over $50k in 2010. We live in an extremely low cost of living area.
We're not far off. We made about 55/60K last year. But we also live an extremely low cost area.
last year we barely broke through the $100K mark. COL is kind of in the middle range here (higher than much of the midwest, but lower than the east coast). My entire income essentially goes to our mortgage and our student loans though, so we definitely don't live a lifestyle that most would think based on our income. It never feels like we make as much money as we do.
Our rent + my loans= greater than my income, so it feels that way for us too.

haha. do i have to have a health assessment to be approved to adopt you? i think i'd fail....
I've always said that if I could just get rid of my loans, then we'd feel like we'd won the lottery.

What? Thousands of dollars in "found" money every month doesn't just happen? haha.

I think we are mid 60's, but we live in a lower cost of living area. That could go up a good amount if Floyd gets the job he has an interview for on Friday. So any good vibes would be appreciated. He doesn't graduate until March but has friends in the IT department (job is at company currently working at) and they say he has a good chance!
Okay after that pathetic plee for vibes lol, I found this site while searching cost of living.

It's pretty interesting. I typed in a wage of $65,000 for Milwaukee and it translates to like $113,000 in Boston. It also said that Boston is 74% more expensive and housing is 212% more than Milwaukee! That's nuts!
fascinating! thanks!
No prob
That is interesting. WI to DC is 213% housing. That means my rent would beeee... Ugh, nevermind.
Stand up for something you believe in.
I love to watch HGTV and prices in places like DC always shock me! With what you can get a huge house here, gets you a small condo there. It always boggles my mind.
I can't watch anymore. When I see 5-bedrooms in Texas going for $100k, I want to puke and cry, all at the same time! And not just because it's Texas... ;p

Tell me about it. Housing prices here have only "fallen" about 3%, which means they're still astronomical.
I told my husband when we looked at houses the first time here what we could buy in the places either of us grew up in for the same amount of money and it made both of us a little bit unhappy.
Stand up for something you believe in.
I always have to remind myself that salaries would change too. If you lived in Texas (versus Boston), your salary would likely be WAY less too. The house you'd be able to buy probably wouldn't be that different if your salary changed with your location, you know? LIke if we moved to some little podunk town tomorrow, I wouldn't be taking my salary with me, you know?
But yeah, we were watching one last night in like Nashville and I'm like "they're looking how how many bedrooms for HOW MUCH?!"
Haha, I agree. It's not as big of a difference to WI, but I am shocked by what people get in the low $100s too!
Yeah, that's acutally something Ames and I were talking about just now -- it's all relative when you think about it. Unless, of course, you're like SIL's husband who was able to telecommute from Texas with a Boston salary. Yeah.... it definitely helped them while she was in grad school.

nice!
Yeah...we considered moving to FL when I graduated from college. Doug talked to his boss about transfering to a FL location and he was told that his salary would also decrease based on the cost of living. We didn't know if we'd ever want to move back home once we started a family and what not, so it would have screwed with his pay coming back home. They probably would have brought him back to the Boston area at a much lower rate, just because they could.
Cool site, Kel!
Boston is 74% more expensive than Bentonville, with housing 174% more expensive. Our $50k salary would translate into $87k in Boston.
Washington, DC is 52% more expensive, with housing 168% more expensive. $50k would translate to roughly $80k.
Denver, CO is 24% more expensive, with housing 62% more expensive. $50k converts to roughly $62k.
Harrisburg, PA is actually 1% cheaper than Bentonville, with housing 1% cheaper. So I'm taking that to mean it's about the same. $50k translates to $49k and change.
Milwaukee, WI is "essentially the same" as Bentonville. Both had overall indexes of 89.
It's very interesting indeed! It pretty much confirms what we've all been discussing.
a little late but thought I would answer. H and I live in a high cost of living area and I don't work. H makes high 5 figures and get a once a yr bonus of anywhere from 20,000-60,000 depending on how well the stock market does. So with his bonus he is pretty well off. However with the cost of living in our area it doesn't go as far as you would think it would. I always wonder how ppl in our area make it work.
We live in a decent size 3 bedroom home yet ppl around us have these million dollar home and it makes me wonder where they get all their money from.
I watch those shows too and it seriously blows my mind as to what people get for their money in bigger cities (DC, SanFran, Seattle.. etc.)
I'm always like, "we could buy 8 of our houses for that!"
I always think of you, Michelle, when I watch the other areas of the country because I remember being amazed at how much you paid for your house vs. how much your house would be here in Boston. haha
