shipping furniture from UK to US

I know most of you probably have more experience going the other direction, but does anyone have any companies to recommend for shipping a sideboard from the UK to the US? DH's uncle has offered us his grandmother's antique sideboard and we'd LOVE to take it, but I have no idea how much it's going to cost to get it back to the US and wanted to get an idea before we say yes or no.

Re: shipping furniture from UK to US

  • We shipped our stuff with Robinsons, and know a few people who have as well. The problem you may run into is that many companies want you to fill a crate or half crate, so you will need to find one that can let you essentially tag on one item into someone else's crate. When I was getting quotes I looked at Allied, Robinsons and one more I can't remember. Allied was good too, just pricier.

  • Thanks, I'll pass that along to DH. I don't think he's looked at their services yet.

  • No suggestions from me, but I'm happy to have this thread and have book-marked it for future use.
  • Thanks for the tip on Robinsons....they worked out to be the cheapest as well (well, of the ones that have gotten back to us - still waiting to hear back from 2 other companies) and I think we are going to go with them as they will do door to door delivery vs some that only go to the nearest port.

The price was actually cheaper than I thought it would be too....bonus!  I think we are going to see about having them bring over some of DH's other stuff too with it, since he has a train set and a few other things boxed up that we'd like DS to have.
