Homemade Laundry Detergent

Hi everyone. I'm new to this board and hope I'm posting in the right place. I've recently decided to make my own laundry detergent and so far, so good. However, I've been doing some research and have found some very negative reviews on Borax. But I can't seem to find a definitive answer as to whether it's safe in detergent. Does anyone else have any knowledge on this?

Thanks!

Re: Homemade Laundry Detergent

  • I just found a recipe for homemade laundry detergent and was curious about the Borax ingredient myself. I am still in search of a definitive answer on this. Do you make powder or liquid laundry detergent?

  • I made homemade laundry detergent about 2 months ago with Borax as well, I'd be interested in hearing about the negative things you read about it, as I did not read anything like that.

  • http://www.epa.gov/iris/subst/0410.htm - shows studies when boric acid is fed to mice, it reduces litter size and birth weight. So don't eat it! Lol. However,

http://www.borax.com/borates4.html says that 90% is excreted through urine, and poorly absorbs through the skin unless there's a cut.

I use it as a laundry detergent, and keep it in a air tight container. I wouldn't breathe the fumes (I wouldn't breathe the fumes of any cleaning agent, lol) but I believe it's safe.

  • Hey can you please post the way you made it?

  • I am not sure, but we use soap nuts (Eco Nuts brand) for our laundry, and love them!

  • I have not heard anything negative about Borax. I've been making my own laundry detergent for about a year now and everything has been great. My husband has very sensitive skin and allergies and this has worked great for him.

This begs the question, what happens to mice if they eat Tide.
