Is Philly the worst.airport.ever?

I mean, JFK and LGA are no picnic.  But I had to fly through Philly yesterday and I was amazed at the level of bad.  I had to wait 50 minutes for a cab.  I couldn't rent a car either.  It was just awful, and my plane was delayed on the tarmc.

*shudders*  Is it always that bad or did I hit it on a really rough day?

  • Not even close.

    But it is pretty terrible.

  • Have you ever flown through MIA? Good lord, nothing can compare to that awful place.

I'd fly through Nairobi before Miami. No joke. And NBO smells like urine and nearly put me on a flight to Bangui instead of Antananarivo. And has no wifi.

*shaking*  I blocked out Miami.  Oh my god.  hold me.

  • Ali! The last time I was in FCO there was a pigeon at my gate. Like sitting on a chair.

That airport is like a bus station.

  • I try to avoid PHL. The last time we were there the A/C in some places were not working at all. It was in July and so freaking hot. Usually I have no problem with that airport but this last trip killed it for me. Crying babies and no A/C, not a happy place.

  • I fly through Philly all the time and have never, ever waited 50 minutes for a cab.  I've never waited at all, they're always queued up in my experience.

Their baggage handling can suck, but I have to say they do okay in snowy/icy weather in terms of departures (well until the point of all flights cancelled gets reached).

Now, the last two times I had to come through Customs and Immigration, the lines have been stupid long, like a freakin' hour (at not obscure times, when several full flights are arriving).  But, at least that gives the crappy baggage speeds a chance to catch up, lol.

    Plus they have Chickie's & Pete's!

Yeah that's right my name's Yauch!
  • Maybe I'm just used to "bad" airports.  I've flown in/out of PHL, EWR, LGA and JFK many times are really don't think one is worse than the other.

I've sat on the tarmac at LGA coming home right before the hurricane for 45 minutes waiting for a gate and had issues with flights out of O'Hare. But never anything major.

  • Paris CDG has to be one of the worst. Ohare sucks too but CDG was horrendous.
  • Being from the Philly area I've flown in/out of there a lot.  It's not my favorite airport, but there are worse.

I HATE MIA.  God it's awful.  Only about 50% of my flights are on time there.

    image
  • I've found Philly and JFK to be ok.  O'Hare was my worst delay ever (hours upon hours...and did not appear to be weather related).  MIA is bad - the worst thing about MIA is that there is nothing to do after you go through security - very few places to eat or drink or buy magazines in a layover. There's also the weird annex terminal that seems really old and gross (I forget what letter terminal it is, but it's off to the side).  I lived there for a few years and probably flew in/out of MIA 30+ times - ugh. I like Atlanta - clean and plenty to keep you occupied in case of delays.
  • MIA has been renovated lately.  It is clean and has more stores/restaurants than in the past.  There are plenty of bars to go to while you are waiting.

It just sucks because there is always a delay.   I was there 2 weeks ago and our plane sat in line for 45 minutes to take off.   Then on the way back we got to MIA 25 minutes early.  But sat on the tarmac for 50 minutes.  I would have rather been in the air at least they were still serving you drinks (I was in first class).

    image
  • I also find MIA more palatable now that I have Global Entry.

Transferring from an incoming int'l flight to a domestic flight used to take me 2+ hours. Now I can at least skip the lengthy immigration line (and the RUDE immigration officers, why are they so awful at MIA compared to every other airport?).

But security there is always terrible as well. And while there are a few more dining options than there used to be it seems like at peak times they are overcrowded and there is nowhere to sit.

You might be the first person I have ever hear that likes the Atlanta airport. I hate it but since it is my home airport I have no choice but to fly out of it!

  • EWR easily the worst for me.

  • Eh, I think that most airports suck equally.  They're there to serve a purpose, and maybe I don't expect much from them.

And let's face it, the #1 reason why "airports" suck is because there's SO MUCH PEOPLE going through them.

Maybe I just hate people?  hmmm..

    Love that!

I don't fly too often, but I do fly in/out of Philly second only to Houston.  We've never had major issues.  Maybe a slight delay once?

  • imagelaptopprancer:

    Plus they have Chickie's & Pete's!

Yes!  It's hard to hate a place where you can get crab fries.

    Now jumping domestically.

Well that was a crazy couple of years.

  • Philly is very dingy.  JetBlue at LAX is pretty gross too.

I did have one bad experience - I missed a connection by like two minutes because it took SO long to get from one terminal to the next.  When we fly out of RIC we almost always have to go through Atlanta and for the most part it's been ok!

I always sail though PHL international.  The rest of PHL I could leave, but Iove that it's such a small international wing.  Since I pretty much only fly London- PHL it works out well for me.

Totally agree with this, there is nothing to do once you get through security, and what is it even trying to be?  Its just bizarre, I like my airports to look like airports.

I actually have had a good experience in Philly and Atlanta, but have had horrible experiences in PHL being hot as buckets with nothing to do.

  • I have flown though Philly many times and it's the worst.  In the winter it's even worse IMO b/c they can't deal with the snow well and they should be able to since that's the climate they are in!
  • No way. LAX, where you have to get your bags, change terminals AND go through customs again for a connecting flight with the same airline is SUCH a pain. Flew Toronto-LAX-Kauai and it was brutal.

MIA is not great, but LAX is 100x worse.

  • I haven't flown through Philly so I can't compare, but Miami is the worst one for me.  They must have the slowest immigration and customs lines ever! I think you need an absolute minimum of 2 hours if you are arriving on an international flight and need to transfer. Even 2 hours is cutting it a little close. If you are delayed at all, forget your second flight.
