Knit Picks question

Hi! My MIL gave me one of my Christmas presents early...a gift card to KnitPicks! Just curious, for those who have bought from them, are the colors close to what they look like online? Are there certain lines of yarn that are a must have in your stash? Any to stay away from? Thanks for your input! Just wanted to add, I don't post here often but I love coming over and getting craft ideas from all of you!

Re: Knit Picks question

  • I love KP.  Right now, my stash almost entirely consists of their stuff (part of that is because I'm lazy and I like to shop online, but another part is that I just love them).

Regarding colors, in the past I've noticed that some colors would arrive darker or more saturated than what they show on the website, but lately I haven't noticed that problem.   Which is good because FIL wanted a very specific *cardinal* red and I found it no problem.

I don't know how much she gave you, but my very favorite thing about KP is their harmony needles.  They are sharp, they are smooth, the cables are flexible...really they're my ideal needle.  KP does have some problems with quality control, but if you notify customer service of a defect, they'll send you a new one right away.

My favorite yarn lines: Pallette, Gloss, Simply Cotton, and City Tweed.  Wool of the Andes is a really good staple wool yarn--it's cheap, sturdy, great for felting, but can be kind of itchy close to the skin.

Sorry for the novel, but I hope that helps!

  • It does! Thanks! I was secretly hoping the expert knitter would respond. =)

I asked my husband for Addi Turbo interchangeables for christmas. I went back and forth between those and the harmony's. Have you used Addi's too? Maybe a girl just needs both?!

  • I have not used the Addis, so I can't be of much help there.  RocknVoll has them and likes them.

Not to be an enabler, but it doesn't hurt to have both :)

Some yarns are more "sticky" and call for a slicker needle, which other yarns are more slippery and work up better on wood.

Wow, I've been wondering about the same questions, and you were extremely helpful. We do not have great yarn shops within 4 hours, so online is where I would have to go for quality stuff (and after quilting long enough to figure out that quilt shop quality fabrics are far superior than Joanns', I'm not going to mess around with crappy yarn. :)

  • I'm making thigh-high sock with KP's Stroll right now. It's ok. It's rather "splitty" (twists into it's individual strands easily) but otherwise it's great. The colors are exactly as I thought they'd be.

I don't have their harmony needles, but I do have Addi Clicks.  OMG.  You would love them!!!

Love my Addis as Reinedumonde said.  I'm also still contemplating asking for the Harmonies for Christmas, also egged on by Reine and cmeon :)

1Thess, there are a few online yarn stores in the FAQ you might want to look into.  WEBS (aka www.yarn.com) is another great site.  Their store is actually here in MA but a couple of hours from me.

I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball
