Re: Snow Poll

  • Oh and the question of the utmost importance: have you made a snow igloo? (I never have).

This might be a P&R because I'm making lunch, but I will be back shortly.

  • 1. Do you prefer the hot or cold? Are you wimpy in the extreme heat or cold?

    * Cold because you can always add more clothes or cuddle.  There are only so many clothes you can remove when it's hot.

    2. Did you have (yearly or regular) snow growing up?

*Definitely.  It's just not Christmassy without some snow.  We spent quite a few holidays in the Alps.

    3. Do you have any mountains nearby? Do you go there?

*Not on this side of the state, but it's our favorite summer vacation spot.

    4. Do you have any snow now? What is the weather like today where you are?

*Nothing good snow wise.  Just an inch that's already melted on the roads. 26F/-3C today.  I think there is a chance of snow later in the week though.

    5. Have you made a snow igloo?

*No, I have a slight fear of being trapped under a snow collapse.  But i have made many snow forts and such.

  • I can't bold on my mac, so bear with me.

    1. Do you prefer the hot or cold? Are you wimpy in the extreme heat or cold? I prefer the fall weather ;) 50s-60s would be perfect.  But I'd much rather have 20 below than 90 above. no lie. (This is why I live in MN...)

    2. Did you have (yearly or regular) snow growing up? of course. I think we average about 5 feet of snow/year?

    3. Do you have any mountains nearby? Do you go there? Nope. There is literally no topography in MN. Damn glacier.

    4. Do you have any snow now? What is the weather like today where you are? We do now! Only about an inch, if that. It's pretty decent out.  The one good thing about snow is it means it's semi-warm out.  If it gets too cold, it can't snow.  That's why January is usually so dry in MN.

I've built many a forts and igloos. They make the best protection during snowball fights ;)

  • Yay! Hi Anna!

     1. Hot person! I pump the heat like there is no tomorrow in the winter because I can't stand the cold. Being a redhead I can't do too much sun either!

    2. No, I've always lived at or below sea level, so if there was any snow, it was for 15 minutes and melted the minute it touches the ground. I have always gone to the Oregon coast for Christmas and they really never have snow.

    3. We do have mountains, and nearby, but I never go :( I wish I would more, just to make snowballs!

    4. Nope, just blustery and bitter cold wind! It's definitely feeling wintery today!

    1. Do you prefer the hot or cold? Are you wimpy in the extreme heat or cold? Hot. I'm a wimp in the cold. I'd much rather sit in the sun.

    2. Did you have (yearly or regular) snow growing up? It snows a little a couple time a year, usually.

    3. Do you have any mountains nearby? Do you go there? Yes, we're near the Appalachian mountains, we go there a few times each year.

    4. Do you have any snow now? What is the weather like today where you are? No snow now.  It's in the 60s and sunny today.

    5. Have you made a snow igloo? No.  I've made snowmen but they usually have grass sticking out of them.

This is really interesting to me. This may be a dumb question, but can you guys grow well? Like agriculture? Is it just a super small window that you can?

Ha! This made me laugh, I've made plenty of slush balls where I have to squeeze out the water to make it pack into a ball.

AATB should answer this for you, since her dad's a farmer ;)  I'm not totally sure, but I know there are a TON of farms all over here.  We are in the heartland of the US afterall ;)  At home (WI), I think most of the farms were dairy farms and grew a lot of grains? A lot of corn, and I know we had a lot of soybeans too?  There were ginseng farms too, and a ton of cranberry bogs.

  • Now I'm curious. ha.  We have apples here too! Honeycrisp apples were engineered at the U of MN (same with SweetTango, if you have those.)  SO GOOD.

They've also engineering grapes that can survive in the winter here for wines.

I mean, we have all the 'normal' veggies too at Farmer's Markets. Onions, potatoes, cucumbers, pumpkins/squashes, peapods, etc.

ETA: HEY! Look what I found :)

  • I hate hate hate the hot. I like being cold much better.

We has snow all the time in Pittsburgh.

We had mountains and would go skiing and tubing. We had a ski club in elementary, middle, and high school.

No snow now. About 58 here in DC. We will be moving to Georgia in January so goodbye to the snow for me. :-(

  • 1. Do you prefer the hot or cold? Are you wimpy in the extreme heat or cold?

I think I prefer the cold. Or at least, I prefer extreme cold to extreme heat. My ideal is around 85.

    2. Did you have (yearly or regular) snow growing up?

     I sure did.

    3. Do you have any mountains nearby? Do you go there?

Uhm, the Ozarks, if you can call them mountains. And I've driven through once or twice.

    4. Do you have any snow now? What is the weather like today where you are?

Not right now. It's 43 and raining.

Heartland of America.  Great growing season considering how much winter we have.  Naturally nutrient-rich soil that stays that way as long as you treat or do crop rotation.  East river SD is completely flat also thanks to glaciers.

This might be a P&R because I'm making lunch, but I will be back shortly.

I've never made an igloo, but I've made a quinzee several times.

  • 1. Do you prefer the hot or cold? Are you wimpy in the extreme heat or cold? I prefer cool/warm. I hate the extremes!

    2. Did you have (yearly or regular) snow growing up? Yup and still do.

    3. Do you have any mountains nearby? Do you go there? I did growing up, my hometown is in the moutains (well, technically the town is in the valley, surrounded by mountains). We did hiking, but I've never been skiing even though there was plenty of it nearby. South Jersey, on the other hand, is completely flat.

    4. Do you have any snow now? What is the weather like today where you are? No snow yet, hopefully it stays snow free for a while! Today it's sunny and warmer than it should be for December.

  • 1. Do you prefer the hot or cold? Are you wimpy in the extreme heat or cold? Cold! I'm not wimpy either way. I do tend to *** about the heat in the summer tho.

    2. Did you have (yearly or regular) snow growing up? Not really. Where I live, it doesn't snow. If we drive an hour to the mountains, it snows there. We used to go like once a year as kids, and I go more than that now.

    3. Do you have any mountains nearby? Do you go there? ^Yup.

    4. Do you have any snow now? What is the weather like today where you are? We have a high of about 66* today. We had a frost advisory last night, and a high wind warning today. It's lovely.

  • 1. Do you prefer the hot or cold? Are you wimpy in the extreme heat or cold? I prefer warm weather, but my optimal season is fall. I can handle extreme cold and heat, which comes in handy living in Indiana.

    2. Did you have (yearly or regular) snow growing up? Yes. Snow starts in November usually and lasts until March/April.

    3. Do you have any mountains nearby? Do you go there? No. We have some rolling hills in southern Indiana, but we don't go there very often.

    4. Do you have any snow now? What is the weather like today where you are? No snow today, but we got about 5 inches earlier this week. It has all melted though. My parents (hour north of us) still have about 3 inches, but they initially got about 10 inches this week. It's unseasonably warm today, around 50* and rainy. Blergh.

  • 1. Do you prefer the hot or cold? Are you wimpy in the extreme heat or cold?

I waffle back and forth between what I prefer and what I don't prefer. I suppose I'm tolerant of either, since I've experienced living in places that have been either extreme.

    2. Did you have (yearly or regular) snow growing up?

Not until I was 11 years old, when we moved to WA from CA. After that, yes, every year we'd get at least a little bit of snow each winter.

    3. Do you have any mountains nearby? Do you go there?

Not here in FL, no. But, growing up, I did. I'd go to Mt. Baker, Snoqualmie Pass, Mt. Rainier/Crystal Mtn., and Mt. Hood.

    4. Do you have any snow now? What is the weather like today where you are?

No way, no snow here. It's about 75*F here right now, which is on the cool side. H and I went to lunch together on Friday and we sat outside, and I caught him shivering. It was 71*F out lol. LIving here has really pussified us when it comes to the cold.

    1. Do you prefer the hot or cold? Are you wimpy in the extreme heat or cold? I would rather be hot. When it's cold my back muscles cramp and I get miserable. I can do extreme dry temps but hate humidity.

    2. Did you have (yearly or regular) snow growing up? Yup. It snows at least once a year here and I grew up (early on) in MN/WI

    3. Do you have any mountains nearby? Do you go there? Yes we do and no. They are about an hour away but I used to work in them doing Indian/early settler sites and am mountained out

    4. Do you have any snow now? What is the weather like today where you are?It is gorgeous! nice and sunny and warm enough to just need a sweater

  • 1. Do you prefer the hot or cold? Are you wimpy in the extreme heat or cold?  Hot.  I am wimpy in cold.

    2. Did you have (yearly or regular) snow growing up?  Yes!

    3. Do you have any mountains nearby? Do you go there?  Not really.  Perfect North Ski slopes are about 2 hours from us and we go there from time to time, but I wouldn't call them mountains. Snow tubing is awesome, though.

    4. Do you have any snow now? What is the weather like today where you are? No snow.  It's about 50 degrees and raining.

No to the snow igloo.  :(

  • TK is making me upset.

    1. I like either.  But if I had to be either too hot or too cold, I would pick too hot. We don't have humidity so the extreme heat really isn't too bad.

    2. Yes, I live in snow country.

    3. Yes, we have lots of mountains.  1 is about a half hour away - Mt. Bachelor (this is the one I ski at regularly).  Another is about 2.5 hours away - Mt. Hood (don't go here very often).  I have skied my whole life.  We have other skiing mountains too, but those are the two biggest ski areas.

    4. No snow in town, but lots on the mountain.  Currently 40* @ 12:40pm, and very sunny.  It was like -7* overnight

  • Totally had to look up what a quinzee was, I guess that's more of what I meant than "igloo", you know what I meant.

And quinzee would be an excellent Scrabble word!

  • 1) Hot. I am a major wimp in the cold. If it's 75 or below, I'm not happy. On the flip side, I am perfectly comfortable in 100* weather.

    2) No. I remember a couple nights here and there growing up where we had frost and flurries, but never any snow.

    3) Nope. Florida isn't exactly known for its hilly landscape.

    4) Nope, just sunshine!

I've never built a snow igloo. I have made a snowball, though.

  • 1. Do you prefer the hot or cold? Are you wimpy in the extreme heat or cold? I have lived in areas where its SUPER cold for super long and it didnt bother me too much. Where I am now is fairly mild, as far as Ontario winters go. I like all weather to be honest. I LOVE storms though, of any nature. Its the hubub before hand that really gets me fired up, everything seemes electric.

    2. Did you have (yearly or regular) snow growing up? Yes, ive always lived with snow. I vaguelly recall much larger snowfalls as a child though.

    3. Do you have any mountains nearby? Do you go there? No.

    4. Do you have any snow now? What is the weather like today where you are? No. Today was grey and windy, but no snow. Its supposed to rain overnight and all day tomorrow. There are snow icons in the 14 day forecast but I somehow doubt it will unless something major happens. Its been frigging mild as hell here.

Aside: ive never made an igloo, I have made many snow forts in my day though.

    1. Do you prefer the hot or cold? Are you wimpy in the extreme heat or cold?

I prefer the hot. But, that's probably because I don't really live with the heat for very long, our summers are quite short, and even they don't classify as "hot". We LOVE to vacation to warm places though. I don't like the cold because then more things don't work. I'm not wimpy in either of them, the cold if just the way of life.

    2. Did you have (yearly or regular) snow growing up?

Haha, yes. Where I grew up, we usually had snow straight through from the beginning of December until the end of February. Where I live now typically has snow from late November until mid April.

    3. Do you have any mountains nearby? Do you go there?

I can see the Rocky Mountains from my backyard. (We live in the Foothills of the Rocky Mountains) We do go there, though not as often as we used to.  We prefer to go there in the summer, the roads are better. And I can cross-country ski here, so we don't have to drive there.

    4. Do you have any snow now? What is the weather like today where you are?

Today, we have about 8 inches of snow. We have shovelled 3 times this weekend. Today, it is sunny, and only marginally windy. Yesterday was gross though- snowed & super windy all day, super grey.

And I have built many forts, a few quinzees, and 1 igloo... they are difficult, and very time consuming, and require a very specific type of snow.

  • 1. Do you prefer the hot or cold? Are you wimpy in the extreme heat or cold?I prefer hot. I can always jump in a cool pool or something, but sometimes you can't get away from the cold.  2. Did you have (yearly or regular) snow growing up?Yup. Every year.  3. Do you have any mountains nearby? Do you go there? No, unfortunately. H is from CO, though, so we go there every so often.  4. Do you have any snow now? What is the weather like today where you are? No snow right now. It's chilly here, maybe 38 degrees, but not horrible. I haven't had to wear my ski pants to walk to work yet.  ETA: No igloo for me. Just big piles of snow to jump into like leaves.

  • 1. Do you prefer the hot or cold? Are you wimpy in the extreme heat or cold? I prefer the hot by far. I am wimpy in extreme cold (in my book that's anything under 25) but even wimpier when it comes to rain. 2. Did you have (yearly or regular) snow growing up? Kind of. We'd get about a day or two a year where it snowed. It only took a half inch or so for school to be closed. I loved snow days. 3. Do you have any mountains nearby? Do you go there? Tahoe. We go about once a year. It's about 4 hours away and the traffic sucks once ski season starts. 4. Do you have any snow now? What is the weather like today where you are?? Nope, no snow. It doesn't snow here. It's about 55 and sunny today. 5. Snow igloo? Snow forts would always encourage my brother to pelt me with snow balls and make me cry. I learned my lesson the first couple times we had enough snow to make one. I stuck to snowmen and snow animals after that.
  • 1. Do you prefer the hot or cold? Are you wimpy in the extreme heat or cold? I prefer the hot. I'm wimpy in either extreme, but I did pretty ok in Phoenix with the heat. The cold just makes me, well, cold.

    2. Did you have (yearly or regular) snow growing up? Yes. We had snow every winter growing up in WA. Sometimes it was more slush than snow, but it was cold and wet, so it counts.

    3. Do you have any mountains nearby? Do you go there? I live in the mountains, so yeah, I'm there all the time. ;-)

    4. Do you have any snow now? What is the weather like today where you are? Yes. We had about 2 feet on the ground yesterday. Today it's chilly, but the sky is blue. I think it's supposed to snow again today and tomorrow.

    5. I've never made a snow igloo. But I have been inside one that someone else made.

  • Winter poll time1. Do you prefer the hot or cold? Are you wimpy in the extreme heat or cold? I would take extreme heat over extreme cold.2. Did you have (yearly or regular) snow growing up? Yes, when we lived in Canada. No when we lived in the MIddle East. Rarely when I lived in Europe.3. Do you have any mountains nearby? Do you go there? Um, yeah, it would be ridiculous to call what we have in Ontario 'mountains', they are more like 'hills'4. Do you have any snow now? What is the weather like today where you are? No snow yet - it has flurried once or twice for 20 minutes.  Today it was around 7degrees celsius and raining at times. It was grey and depressing for most of the day.
