Tattoo Questions

I need an honest answer.  How much does a tattoo on your foot hurt.  Don't give me that 'Oh it's not bad at all!' crap.  If it stings a lot, tell me!  If it felt like the pain of 1000 suns, tell me!

I may have settled on a design that I really like and am leaning towards the side of my foot.  If you all tell me it will hurt bad, I may have to come up with a different position.  Where is a good place to put a tattoo that would probably be 2x1 inches and wouldn't be visible in normal clothing?

Re: Tattoo Questions

  • Tattoos hurt. Period. My foot hurt much worse than my back. But, I survived and lived to tell the tale and I want to have work done on it/add to it.

  • Thank you for being blunt.  I know tattoos hurt, and it drives me batty when people say they don't.  Liars.  Where on your back is yours just for reference?

I've considered low on the hip, but I'm afraid of stretching.  I keep trying to think of places that won't grow too much, but the only one I can come up with is foot.

  • I really feel that pain associated with tattoos is highly dependant on your personal response to, and threshold for, pain in general. Of course, the location of the tattoo has something to do with it, but if you have a low tolerance for pain then it will hurt regardless of where the design is.

My tattoo was done on the back of my right hip and I can honestly say that it didn't hurt after the initial contact of the needle. It felt like I was being scratched repeatedly by someone with rough fingernails. Not exactly pleasant, but not painful.

That being said, my friends who have tattoos on their feet said they were more painful for them than their other work on other parts of the body. If you are wary of potential pain then I suggest choosing a more fleshy area for your tattoo.... like the hip suggestion from Maria. I think if you go for the lower hip, right above where your hips meet your leg, it shouldn't stretch that much over the years.

Good luck and let us know what you decide!

This exactly.  I have a tattoo in the middle of my back, right above my shoulder blades.  I honestly forget it's there but sometimes when I wear certain shirts or a bathing suit you can see it.  People are quite shocked when they realize I have one.

  • I agree with Laura.  I have one on my back left shoulder blade.  I always forget it is there and people are shocked that I have one.  It wasn't that painful at all.  I got it January of 2004 so my memory might be skewed, but I honestly don't remember much pain associated with it.

I have always wanted one on my foot.  I just can't decide what to get.  The one on my back is a memorial for my brother.  What is the design you are going to get?

  • I have also always wanted one behind my ear.  Not sure why...

My BFF/twin has one there in honor of her mother. Just a small, pretty pink heart outlined in black. You can only see it when her hair is up. I've always loved it.

  • I have one on my back. It felt like someone was dragging a needle across my skin, probably because he was! It survived and it wasn't like I was in agony or anything. Once he started the color it wasn't so bad. I had it done when I was 18 (almost 10 years ago). It is in the middle of my shoulder blades.

  • I don't have any tattoos, but both my daughters do.  My youngest has one on her foot, ribs, and wrist.  My understanding is that any area that is close to the bone hurts the worst.  Areas with a little more padding hurt less.

  • Sorry for not responding quickly.  I've been so busy I haven't had time to get on the computer more than once a day.  I's tired.

I think the hip might be the best place.  Thanks ladies.

    I'm looking to get this:

If you press play and then pause it right after the blue screen goes away, I want to get the notes that are on the 'B' (bass) line as a tattoo.  I've always thought that this is the most beautiful piece of music ever written, and I want it played at my funeral.  I'd need someone to pretty it up a little bit, though, so it doesn't look like sheet music.  We'll see!

  • I know I'm late here, but I thought I'd chime in...

I have a tattoo on my foot and I LOVE it there. It did hurt more than the one I have on my hip, and honestly, I don't love that location as much since nobody ever sees it.

The foot one hurt randomly, there were parts that just felt like scratching, and then a few areas where it really felt like I was being cut.  That said, it didn't last that long as the area is small, and I would get another one on my foot in a heartbeat, even with the pain.

  • Yes it hurts when you are drawing tattoo on your foot but, if you have the passion for tattoo then I don?t think that pain matters for you.
