Job advice needed

So now that we have gotten DH's job situation all settled I guess it was time for mine to spiral out of control, ugh! (I may delete some of this later FYI)

Here is the situation:  I am a healthcare professional, currently an assistant, in graduate school to advance in my career.  Since starting school I have had to cut my hours, first to 32, and more recently to 24.  I am supposed to work four 6 hr days.  I work for a large company that owns/operates several facilities in my area.  Since cutting my hours they have moved me from one facility to another because the facility I worked in needed someone who was full time.   The problem is after I was moved I found out that the facility I am working in now may not have enough work for me.  (For example I went to work for 2.5 hrs this morning ugh!)  So needless to say I am a bit stuck and looking for a solution.  Here are my ideas and I would love any feedback you may have!

1. Stay where I am and get bounced from facility to facility as the caseload varies and deal with days like today where I go in expecting 6 hrs and work for 2.5.  The only benefit to this option is I have worked for this company for 3 years now and therefore I am familiar with their system.

2. Look for another part time job in my field.  The difficulty in this is that I might run into another situation that I am in now, not enough work for someone part time, or too much work for someone part time.

3. Transition to a PRN or per diem role at my job and pick up a few other per diem jobs meaning that if they need someone to cover a vacation, sick day, spike in caseload etc they can call me.  The benefit of this is that I would be in charge of my own schedule, as they would come to me and ask me if I could work x amount of hrs instead of me being scheduled to work and going in and finding 2.5 hrs.

Thanks in advance for any advice you may have!

Re: Job advice needed

  • Is this happening regularly at work? If so, I'd speak with the company and tell them you are thinking of leaving the company if they cannot keep provide enough hours for you. My guess is that they would be unhappy to see someone go that is experienced and in school to gain more experience. If this doesn't happen very often, then I would stay stick with the company that you've been with for 3 years instead of going to something more unpredictable.

I have worked a per diem job during grad school, and I had a lot of trouble keeping it up. Every time school got busy, I would reduce my hours at the job, but then it was very difficult to increase hours back later because I was used to the reduced hours and got busy in other ways.

I hope your company can work with you instead of against you!  But maybe start looking into option 2 or 3 as a backup.

  • I would stick with your current employer.  Maybe have a sit down with them and let them know that you'd like to be notified of the time you'd be putting in each day, i.e., have someone call and let you know where you'd be and how long you'll be working.

I think it could be hard to find another part-time position that is as flexible as your current, but then again could be wrong.
