Receiving Govt. assistance while living in 1.2mil house

The story said they get approximately $1200/mo, for 10 years. That's $144,000. And that's only one couple. I'm sure they aren't the only ones scamming the system.

Hell yeah they should pay it back. Considering my elderly mother's house with be taken when she dies to pay for her hospital stay when she broke her hip, YES they should pay it back!
Me too, Steph. I work too damn hard not to be pissed when people do shiit like this.

Considering this is what I make on a monthly, this makes me sick. And we all helped finance them!
And then there are swell people like this:

This just makes me want to barf! That's a lot of money, for a long ass time.
This reminds me of that one guy who bought a house with a paperclip.

They get $1200 in just housing vouchers. They also get state and government disability checks plus food stamps.
This is just disgusting to me. I'd like for my tax dollars to go towards hiring more investigators in the Job and Family Service department. I'm sure they'd more than pay for themselves in a couple of months.
Agreed. It's sad how many people who are actually in need that are denied services when there are people like this taking advantage of the system. There obviously needs to be more checks and balances.

I agree with this. That is a lot of money for housing alone. Thats more than our monthly mortgage payment on a 3-bedroom house in a nice neighborhood.
Yesterday my DH had me read a FB post ranting about the benefits you would get if this one girl ran the welfare system. And it wasn't much, just beans, rice and milk. I thought she was very extreme. Maybe she had just read this article. (i don't know if I can find it, it was on his FB feed and I am not FB friends with the poster.)
I liked the house/minivan trade story.
Thats crazy that Diana Ross' old house is only really worth a minivan while people in a $1.2million house are one welfare. There is something seriously wrong here.
Technically, if they had no jobs, the only proof of their situation a gov. worker had was their address, and their other state help. In Oregon they ask if you've made donations, but I'm sure you could just lie.
I'm slightly curious how they got by with more than one type of welfare coming in, and that much. The address is tough, because let's face it, you can't really expect an agent to memorize every neighborhood in Seattle, but I agree workers should be hopping in a car to look every once in a while.
One thing I'm pretty sure they don't check at all is traveling, but they definitely should. I think it's safe to say you shouldn't be leaving the country in any form if you're on assistance (unless it's deployment).
Dang, that must have been an awesome paperclip.

It has slipped through the system because those in charge have let it.
Yes, they should have to pay money back.
Stuff like this pisses me of SO SO SO much. There are schools suffering, assistance programs that can't help people who truly need it, and these selfish assholes are living off the government and then some when they don't need it.

It wasn't a paperclip. This guy in Canada started with a red paperclip on Craigslist and traded his way up to a house. So for the clip he got a pen and for the pen he got ....something and so on and so forth until he had a car which he traded for a house.
I actually didn't know that because I've never looked up a house's value before :P
Yeah, I agree, every year they should be re-checking their facts, and ten years is really beyond ridiculous.
I'm curious how WA does their checks because I already know none of that would've flied in OR, they have 6 month check-ins that feel like the FBI is investigating you... They have required job finding classes and I'm not positive but I think they have a time cut-off altogether. Right about the 9/11 recession Oregon took a step back and changed a lot of policies.
This is what I was referring to.

Zillow.com is the place you can look up a houses value. And it only takes a key stroke.
That is crazy! Wow!

I'm totally looking up my parent's house now.
It's interesting: They claim the house has one more bedroom than it really does, but otherwise it is accurate. And I'm wondering what makes the smaller house across the street more... (probably comparing what they were both last sold for? Eeenteresting)
Teachery Blog
It thinks our house is an empty lot up the street.....
It also has a lot more "house values" than there houses on my street.
ETA: Unless that doesn't mean anything. Maybe it just puts the values where it has room. I'm not sure.
Does Zillow call him out with their quote or does it just list his?
That would be kind of funny. Zestimate: 250k Selling price: 500k. Haha.
Fraud makes me so angry. It makes me mad when I see families who sign up for free lunches, Christmas present programs, food stamps, welfare, etc wear expensive clothes and drive new cars. These people just take it to a whole new level.
How was this allowed to go on for so long? There needs to be a stricter verification/ qualification process for sure.
Zillow is SUPER inaccurate, unless the house has recently sold (it'll pull the sale price.) But, all property information is public knowledge, through either your city or county websites. You can see the actual appraised value and taxes. (You can also call the utility companies- gas/water/elec- and get an average cost for the last 6 or 12 months.)
