NER: Name your favorite scary movie
My husband and I are making big plans to pass out candy and watch scary movies halloween night. He loves all kinds of creepy movies, but I'm more discriminating. I CANNOT deal with Saw or Hostel or anything of that genre. I am more into mystery and ghostly stuff. For example, I liked "The Exorcism of Emily Rose".
Do you all have any favorites you could recommend?
Re: NER: Name your favorite scary movie
Jesus Camp?
Have you watched Bram Stoker's Dracula? ?It's a typical dracula story with the neck biting and all that, but it's also almost a chick flick romantic story.?
Without being too much of a spoiler, I think we were to believe that she was truly possessed. Did you know that it's based on a true story? That aspect of it is pretty interesting, though I am generally pretty skeptical about this stuff.
My absolute favorite is Dawn of the Dead (the original), but all zombie movies by George Romero are held near and dear to my heart.
Mr. Liu and I watch mostly watch the classics: Nightmare on Elm Street, Halloween, Friday the 13th, Hellraiser, etc. I really enjoy the black and whites, too, especially anything with Bela Lugosi.
Ha! I've seen Jesus Camp and it was rather disturbing. My husband lost interest so that will never work
I did see Dracula and really liked it. We are not opposed to repeats and that is a great suggestion. It will definitely go on the list.
Yeah, I generally take "based on a true story" to mean "there was a guy with this name and something bad happened to him, but not the stuff we actually put in this movie."
I actually got really bored with EoER. ?I just didn't care what happened to/with those people.
I'm trying to think of other movies. ?I really like psychologically twisted movies, but not thriller or horror flicks. ?My mind is blanking, though. I know they're out there, but I can't remember them.
Der. ?Silence of the Lambs and Hannibal type movies. ?Would those be on the list? ?Or are they not supernatural spooky enough??
I'm the same way. I hate gory movies but I like spooky/eerie ones. To me, what you don't see is scarier than what you do. I really liked The Others with Nicole Kidman.
I have The Orphanage from Netflix right now but haven't watched it yet. My mom said it was really really good though.
.I hate scary movies, especially if it's something that could really happen, like with psycho killers. I am especially not a fan of the new wave of slasher / rape films (for example, Wolf Creek). Boo.
For an old classic, try the Watcher in the Woods. Warning--not scary, but campy and nostalgic if you watched it as a child.
Anything with vampires - I am a big fan of the old B&W Bela Lugosi classic.
Stuff with possession freaks me out - our babysitter let my brother and I watch the Exorcist years ago (I was maybe 9?). I loved the babysitter (despite her actions giving me nightmares for years to come LOL) so my parents were never the wiser - although they did wonder why I started sleeping outside their bedroom door.
I can't even stand to hear the music from that movie now.
mw - I have heard enough about the Ring to know, no way, no how, I am never gonna watch it.
I caught some of Poltergeist last night - and remembered why I hate clowns.
I can't remember if they ever really indicated how Emily Rose died. Anyone else remember? I think it was a too much crazy trauma, malnourished sort of a thing.
Yes the Hannibal Lecter stuff is on the right track. The Asian movies freak me the hell out. I saw something about The Audition on Bravo's scariest movie moments show and I am certain I couldn't handle it. My husband would probably think it was great.
I will look into The Orphanage as well.
Oh come on! The Wizard of Oz is on that list! "List of scary movies" FAIL
I've heard that Japanese horror movies are really scary, but I'm not so sure. A lot of them have subtitles, which detract from the scariness.

I think it depends on your age. My youngest sister had nightmares about the flying monkeys in Wizard of Oz and falling down rabbit holes like Alice in Wonderland.
Now see The Ring didn't bother me that much. But even my husband who loves Hostel thought it was pretty scary.
The Exorcist came on Saturday night and I told my husband that once the kid started wigging out, it was time to turn the TV off. He loves that movie. That movie scarred me as a child and I probably on saw bits and pieces of it. On a related note, the ads for The Shining sent me into a frenzy and I couldn't sleep for many nights.
The Audition is one f-ed up movie!
Mr. Suecadence and I love horror, particularly 60s and 70s era classics. Rosemary's Baby, The Exorcist, Dawn of the Dead, Dario Argento's stuff, and Hitchcock. ?The Birds is probably my favorite movie of all time.?
All time fave-Pet Sematary. Also love The Shining, and Exorcist III (seriously--it's really, really good).

Is the new Angelina Jolie movie of the same name a remake of this?

I hate-hate-hate movies like Saw, Hostel, Wolf Creek, etc. Torture porn, I call it. I guess they are extra hard for me because they are entirely plausible in the way that the Exorcist and the Ring (my all time scariest movie) are not. I've always been freaked out by the idea of scary inbreds who chop up people for fun and laugh while they do it. Urgh.
Speaking of that Bravo list of 100, I watch that show every year!
Why not try some of the freakier movies of the 70's? Suspiria, Don't Look Now, Phantasm are all super-creepy.
Some of my other creepy favorites: Videodrome, Jacob's Ladder, Serpent & the Rainbow, and Army of Darkness.
And for a suspenseful but sweet/romantic movie, I highly recommend Dead Again.
Nope--same name, totally different movie. I thought it was made in the 70s, but it looks like it's actually from 1980:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0080516/
BWAHHHHHHHHHAHAHAHAAAA! Whew, that almost made me choke on a grape.
I'm with TTT--I like thrillers better than actual horror.
My actual favorite though is The Shining. I find it both scary and really, really well done.
Otherwise, I liked Hannibal, Silence of the Lambs, The Red Dragon, The Ring (so scary I had to sleep over at a friend's house so I wouldn't be alone in my room), Rosemary's Baby, and actually 28 Days Later. It scared me a lot when I watched it last Halloween, and I might watch it or its sequal again.
Also, please tell me know one thinks The Exorcist was anything near real.
The Shining and Exorcist are the scariest movies on my list. The Ring was ok until they made it too unrealistic. I love the stuff that can actually happen in real life and scare the crap out of myself. I couldn't go to sleep after I first saw The Shining, and I was already in high school when I first saw it.
Saw was scary, but I am not really into the gorey stuff. I like more suspense than blood.
I went to Catholic school and got brainwashed into thinking anything regarding exorcisms are real. So, when I finally watched the Exorcist, I thought it was real. It might not be exactly how it happened, but that little kid did have something wrong with him. The thought of the something real spooked me more than any special effects.
