Ohhhh, burn.

My Amazon Prime membership just expired today. All you Amazon Mom members know what I'm talking about. Luckily I finished up most of my Christmas shopping last week, but I just went to check the price of something and found that I no longer have the free prime shipping option. I have to use Super Saver like any normal human being.

And they're not accepting new Amazon Mom applications, so I can't even pretend to be DH.

Re: Ohhhh, burn.

  • lol!

we've paid for prime for 5 years simply because it's totally worth it. pays itself back every year. DH, on of his sisters, and i are all on DH's account.

  • Ohhhh that sucks.

But at least you're finding out now and not, like 2 days before Christmas?  Because then that would reallllly suck.

We also pay for it, and its totally worth it. I can't tell you how many times I've ordered something for less than $10 or $15 and not worried about shipping. I now try to buy everything on Amazon when possible!

  • I got a membership as a birthday gift, and LOOOOVE it!

I also like their Amazon scanning app for my phone.  When I'm in the store, I can compare prices to see if I want to buy something or wait until I get home to order on Amazon!

  • Mine expires next Monday. It pains me. I am going to try and get all my shopping before it expires. And hopefully I'll get a membership for Christmas!

Oh  yeah, I love their app.

But, no. I'm not paying $80 for prime. No offense, but I think that's kind of crazy. That's like two week's worth of cheese and wine.

  • Oh no! You don't happen to have an .edu email address, do you? If you do, you can sign up for Amazon Student, which gives you Prime at half price.

  • I kind of balked at $79, too.

But, it really comes in handy.

Like, for instance - right now, we're out of Q-tips.  It happened to occur to me while sitting at work.  So, just now, I ordered a HUUUUUGE pack of Q-tips for $7.  Like, 2,000 Q-tips.  They will arrive at my doorstep in just a few days (much sooner than I would have actually remembered to go to the store to get them.)  I won't have to make a trip to Target/CVS/or any other crazy store - wasting time.

It increases my shopping, but really only for deliberate purchases.  It all shows up at my doorstep, no fuss.

I justify it by all the times I order one book or item when I would have ended up ordering multiple things to get to free supersaver shipping without prime. I would say that about 75% of my orders are less than $25 and the ones that are more are diapers.  Then add in the convenience factor of being able to procrastinate and $80 is the bargain of the century.  Also, being near a distribution center, we generally get things next day, which is awesome.

By spending the $80 on Prime, I have so much more time to enjoy cheese and beer :-) My time is worth more than money!

  • Amazon Prime has made my carbon footprint very high. :(

I received 6 different boxes from Amazon yesterday. I can't explain why they shipped everything separately, but they did! One was a Christmas gift that my mom sent for Michael, but the rest were my purchases.

Also, I think my UPS guy probably hates me.

  • There will be a grieving period, but I think I'll survive. I do subscribe and save for a few things (free shipping through that) and usually anything under $25 is a book, which I buy used and have to pay shipping on anyway. Pre-Prime, I always bundled my purchases to be $25 so I really can't see myself spending $80 on shipping in a year. Plus, if I need a $7 crate of Q tips, I'll send DH to Costco during his lunch break ; )

And actually, I do have a .edu address, so I'll keep that Amazon Student idea in my back pocket. Thanks, Wines!

given that you live so close to Costco, totally understandable.

I also got in on the Shoprunner free 1-year membership the other day... Woo-hoo!  :)

DH had to help our UPS guy yesterday.  I had 9 boxes delivered Embarrassed

  • whew! I just checked and mine doesn't expire until the 21st (which still sucks). but I should be done with xmas shopping by then ;-)
  • Ours was ending in January but I negotiated with one of my step-brothers to split the cost if he added me to his account. He's had prime for years. So, I'm going to pay him half of the annual membership cost ($40) each Thanksgiving to cover my part. Can you find someone to share it with?

To share it, they just need to go to: Your Account > Manage Prime Membership

They'll need to add you as a same household family member and enter your birthdate. Then you'll get an invitation where you have to enter their birthdate and your birthday. So far, Amazon hasn't cared that my address is different from his. I think the primary member can add up to four members. My step brother has his wife, me and my DH all on his account.

  • I just found out mine expired yesterday. I saw your FB post before this thread, so I just got a rude awakening when I tried to immediately sign up DH for Amazon Mom. :(

I don't believe for a minute their Mom membership is full, I think it's totally because people figured out the system and they were trying to stop it. In which case, I'm irritated at all the people who didn't legitimately belong to Amazon Mom that ruined it for the rest of us.

I'm trying to decide if I'm willing to spend the $79 on Prime or not. (I bet if I do pay up, suddenly DH will be accepted for Amazon Mom!)

    .

This doesn't help with the carbon from the boxes.... but, I'm considering taking some of the smaller boxes I've gotten stuff in (if DH didn't destroy them...) and spray painting them to wrap Christmas gifts in.  I saw someone on FB do that with their TJ's paper bags, and it was really cute.

If you have a free corner of your living room/playroom, C loves playing with an assortment of Amazon boxes. Stacking them, knocking them down, hitting them with other random toys. The kid loves a good box.

I don't have access to FB at work, but will see if I can pull a copy of the picture later tonight.  And, if I do it myself with the boxes, I'll post that as well!

My theory is that they are suspending the program just for the holidays and that it will open it back up in January. They probably didn't want everyone signing up for the free 3 months just to get their holiday presents. Or at least, that's my theory.

Sprout's 3rd word was box.  True story.  It came right after cheese & "side" (meaning outside).  This is probably partly due to my husband having some bike part arrive in the mail every damn day, but it's mostly due to his love of boxes. Homeboy has his priorities, clearly.

I assumed she meant because of the UPS man driving to her house everday -- not just the boxes and all of those little airpacks.
