Divorce

So I am looking for lawyers ( read the back story below ) . I was wondering if anyone had any advice ?  Any suggestions on what I should ask the lawyer and also what I should bring to the consultation? Basically any tips ? Thanks.

Here's my previous post if you want to read about  the situation.

Re: Divorce

  • I just read your posts and I feel for you. You need to kick this guys arse.
  • I would try to find a recommendation from family/friends. Also, ask them what types of cases they usually handle (i.e. you don't want a labor attorney handling your divorce).

Ask about billing!! Do they round up to 15 minutes? Do they bill if the receptionist calls you? Etc.

Ah ah INDEED. I still need to investigate the thing and read the contract again.

Ok here is what I did. I looked for divorce attorneys in my area on the internet. Once you get on their website, you can read about them and get a 1st impression. Once you have selected a couple lawyers, look them up on Avvo.com to see how they are rated by their peers/clients.

Then call them and ask these 3 questions:

    - is your 1st consultation free?

    - how much do you charge per hour?

    - what is your retainer?

Run away if you feel like a lawyer is forcing you to hire them on the spot (after the initial consultation). They're after money.

Don't bring anything to the 1st consultation except for a list of questions/concerns you have. Don't be afraid to ask any questions you may have. Once you hire a lawyer, they will tell you what documents they need from you.
