Where do you want to retire to?

Have you ever thought about this? If money weren't an issue, where would you spend your golden years?

Bonus for pip.

My favorite place on earth: The Amargosa Valley.

Re: Where do you want to retire to?

  • Dh and I decided on our last trip that we love the high desert near Death Valley. The Amargosa Valley is so isolated and pretty, with 360 mountain views and it attracts lots of fun, artsy people. We figure we can spend winter/fall/spring there and summer in the Bay Area (because I don't want to be there when it's 115).

I could handle seeing this view every evening.

  • Laguna Beach.  Grew up near there and spent many days at the beach and wandering around there.  Love it.
  • DH and I would LOVE to own a small B&B or Inn somewhere in CA when we retire.  We want to be able to have a place that can make us money, and that our family can come to and visit.

  • Hawaii.  Probably Oahu as I like having some semblance of city life available, but that island vibe would be awesome in retirement I think.

Otherwise, we'd also love to go back to the Bay Area.

I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball

  • Here in New Zealand, but not Wellington.  I would love to live on the south island, probably own a bach in Golden Bay.
  • Ever since I was 9 and first read AoGG, I have wanted to live on Prince Edward Island on the Atlantic Coast of Canada. Now that I have been there in 2009, I would love to even more. It is nearly impossible to settle there though. You can't just move there and buy a house. It's such a popular destination and it's a small island, so there are lots of hoops to jump through. • We haven't really discussed it but we both like the idea of being off grid in the Sierra's or foothills somewhere. Would want to be close enough to drive into a city for everyday things but far enough from the hustle and bustle.

Ooh, check out the little towns on highway 395. It's nice up there.

  • Probably back in San Diego (which is warmer) or stay here (because it would be hard to leave friends and start over without jobs to make new friends)
  • If we inherit E's family's property in Union, WA we will retire there. Its right off the Hood Canal and an hour ferry trip from Seattle. Its absolutely breath taking.

View from the driveway. The little beach to the right of the picture is shared by the Nordstoms and Bill Gates :) E said it was cool spending the summer there as a kid because Bill Gates did the best fireworks on the 4th of July and you could sit on the porch at his grandparent's house and watch them.

E's grandparents house is amazing though which is the main reason for wanting to live there and the beautiful area. The house is a log home all hand milled by E's grandfather from logs cut from the property.
