TIP Mamas: A Burping Question

I would ask on 0-3 but often there is not a lot of activity there.

So Abby does not always burp. I will try all the methods (over the shoulder, bounce on the knee, tummy time with patting) for about 2 minutes each. I would say 75% of the time she lets one rip like a man (lol).

However, the times that she doesn't burp I figure that she just doesn't have to. She does have some gas issues so I like to try to minimize them as much as I can. Some is unavoidable of course.

I no longer BF. My period showed up like clockwork and my milk supply tanked. I couldn't get it back. So now she is on formula.

My question is this: Is it alright that I don't get a burp every time I try? She is burped half way through her bottle & at the end.

It sounds so stupid to ask, but for some reason I thought babies were supposed to burp readily. Thanks!

Re: TIP Mamas: A Burping Question

  • if she's not fussy/gassy/pukey, it's fine--some babies dont' swallow much air and don't NEED to burp.
  • It's completely fine. DS#2 almost never burped.

  • Ditto the rest of them. Each baby is different.

  • I will agree that some gassiness is unavoidable and doesn't make you a bad burper or she for that matter. Just keep the mycilon drops on hand and use them as often as you feel it would provide her some relief.

Also, 6 weeks of age can really be a rough patch. There's often a growth spurt at that point, and fussiness levels for whatever reason just naturally have a tendency to peak at this age.

IME Baby Fuss would just go through little spates where his little digestive system would get a bit out of whack for a couple of days, then right itself again. They are growing and developing so fast at this stage. (He'd do the same with his respiratory system --  there'd be like two nights of hilarious snoring then it would be gone as suddenly as it came on.)

That is exactly what has been going on! Yesterday she was fussing like a demon from hades. Really, she normally such a happy baby and yesterday I was wondering where she went. Turns out that she had two diapers full of poop she had been working on pushing out. She just had been backed up a bit.

I thought we would escape the fussy period, but here we are in the thick of it. Oh well, we will just ride it out with lots of cuddles. Poor little bug.

  • No big deal at all.

Some babies burp, some don't.  Some babies spit up if they don't burp, some don't.    After I nurse DS, I'll sit him up and give him some pats on the back, but if I get nothing within 10 seconds, that's it.

  • We just got through the six week growth spurt from hell.

I'd say that you're doing plenty to help her burp; if she doesn't, it's pretty safe to assume that she doesn't need to.

    Ditto Fuss.

Also, if you know she hasn't pooped for a while, you can rub her belly in a circular motion (works for gas, too) or lay her on her back and work her legs like she's riding a bike.

Baby Geek used to get fussy as hell when he was "off schedule" so to speak.  Eventually, you'll figure out her 'normal' patterns and be able to help her.  (You know, just before they change up again, LOL)

One of the things that helped us get through the fussy stage was swaddling BG.  They have these things called Miracle Blankets and they really help to calm newborns down.  Essentially, their first 3 months out in the world are kind of like a 4th trimester and being swaddled makes them feel confined and safe like they were in the womb.

  • Baby Malibu rarely burped. H would try all the time and she'd never burp for him, and he'd think he was doing something wrong. I wouldn't worry unless she's acting like her stomach's upset (curling up and keeping her legs pulled up, extra irritable), even then don't worry, just try some Mylicon like previously suggested, or try doing the "bicycle kick" with her legs. Worked for Baby Malibu every time, since Mylicon never seemed to help her.
    Oh, FFS.
  • Nope, DS hardly burps anymore, but when he does its LOUD.

I always keep gripe water on hand just in case.

  • I've noticed that Babydubs burps a lot less since we switched bottles from Playtex Drop-Ins to Dr. Browns. They cut the gassiness down to almost none.

Mylicon drops were a godsend with the Playtex bottles.
