Interview question - weaknesses

I have an interview tomorrow, and the "what is your greatest weakness" question always trips me up.

What do you guys say?

Re: Interview question - weaknesses

  • Why does it trip you up? Be honest with yourself - what is something that you could improve on, and what have you actually done to try and get better at it?

This isn't a trick question - it's asked to see how well you can do self reflection and whether you can "manage" yourself.

I tend to get super flustered when deadlines approach or my workload increases, and I get easily distracted. I deal with this by prioritizing, putting myself on a detailed timeline, and minimizing distractions (only check email once ever hour, etc). It's the truth.

Don't feed the interviewer any crap about being a perfectionist or working too hard. Don't give them a weakness that is totally irrelevant to the job. Both of those things make you look like an idiot.

  • I can't believe that interviewers are still asking that question. :)

I would respond with a skill that I am not strong in however would like to develop.  I'd try to avoid something about your personality.

If I ever get asked this question again I'm going to honestly answer that it is remembering names when I meet people.  I really struggle with recalling names so I have to focus extra hard and keep a running list of names of people that I can refer back to.  It isn't very professional to have to ask someone to remind you of their name when you are trying to build a professional relationship with this person.  So it is, IMO, a legitimate response!

  • The point of it is to show that you're aware of your limitations and that you're working on whatever they are. Be honest, and show how you're working on it.

For example, you're not comfortable speaking in public, but you use certain techniques before a presentation. Or you  don't always have good attention to detail, so you create checklists so you don't miss anything. Etc.
