Albany, NY suburb recommendations

Hi Ladies!

I live in Alexandria, VA with my husband and two boys (ages 3 and 8 months.)  My husband is considerign a transfer to Albany, NY but neither of us has every been there and we know nothing about the area.  We are going up to visit after Xmas.  Can anyone provide any information about cities/towns to look at?  We are looking for a family-friendly, safe, suburban neighborhood with great schools.  (My parents are in NJ, so we are particularly interested in living south of Albany to be closer to NJ, but are considering all suburbs.)

Any info anyone can provide would be so helpful!  We are also looking to meet with a realtor when we go up to house hunt (the week between Xmas and New Year's) if anyone has any referrals.

Thank you so much!

Nancy

Re: Albany, NY suburb recommendations

  • I can help you out in the school district department.  I would recommend a few different areas based on schools.  Niskayuna, Bethlehem, North or South Colonie, or the Clifton Park area have great school districts.  These towns are mostly suburban and are close to everything.  Depending on the town, the taxes will vary.  I'm not sure what they would be but I'm sure your realtor could help you with that part.   They are pretty friendly and family oriented areas.  Out of the towns above, Bethlehem is the only one that's really south of Albany.  Most of them are just north of Albany or really part of Albany (Colonie schools have Albany zip codes).

Anyway, I hope this helps narrow down your search a little.

  • Just wanted to say "hi" as I currently live in Alexandria, VA (right near Arlington) and am originally from upstate (though further north than Albany). We'll be moving back eventually too. Best of luck!
  • I forgot to add Guilderland to that list.  It's a good school district too.  Nice area.
  • I agree with Dar...all of those are excellent school districts.  Colonie has the lowest taxes though.  My friend Andrea Durkin is realtor here in the area..
  • We loved our realtor, Linda Lewis with coldwell banker (518) 527-5095

Bethlehem is a good school south of Albany- and not sure how much of a commute your DH wants but Greenville- is a small town about 25m south of albany- and they have great schools but its a small town...(not sure what amenities you want..)

most of the albany burbs have easy acess to the highway- so no matter where you end up it shouldnt add too much time to your trip to NJ

  • I grew up in Niskayuna and currently live in Clifton Park.  Virtually all of Albany's suburbs have good schools.  I would stay away from Albany proper, Troy and Schenectady.

I love Nisky, there are some beautiful houses with lots of character, but the taxes are a killer.

I love being in CP because it's smack in the middle between Albany and Saratoga.  Saratoga is filled with great restaurants and is a lot of fun in the summer, but because I work in Albany I didnt want a 45 minute commute.

Other towns to look into that weren't mentioned above are Latham and Loudonville which are both in the N. Colonie School District.
