s/o mailman gifts

Who else do you give gifts to outside family and friends?

We usually do mailman, trash guys, cleaning lady and hairdresser.

I got a holiday card in our newspaper the other day signed by the lady (I think, it was a name I've never seen) and I wondered if people give stuff to them too. I'm not even sure how I would do that.

  • We got a card in the paper at WORK from our paper guy that said something about the paper always being there before sun up no matter the weather and it was nice to tip or something like that.  Insane.

this was not that direct! Just happy holidays. Once the trash guy left my parents a happy holiday card every other day until they gave him something (they always do anyway, but it was a little weird).

  • How do you even tip the trash guys? Taped to a trash can? Mail it somewhere? I'm pretty baffled by that.

Honestly, I don't tip any of those people. I might if I had a cleaning lady, but that's the only one that I would consider.

    The former jen5/03.

Especially in our neighborhood where we have the big cans that are picked up by arms on the truck. The drivers never get out!

This,  if I had a cleaning lady or yard guys I'd probably give them something but none of the others.  We never even have the same mail carrier from day to day.

My big boy is bounding towards 3! Hoping to add a sibling. image Hipster dog is not impressed.
  • i'm tipping my UPS guy - i see him pretty much on a daily basis and we're on their "top 10 most delivered to" list (i don't think that's a good thing). he always takes the time to wrap my packages in plastic if it's raining since i don't have a porch over hang.

trash guys i've tipped before, but the ones at our new house i won't. they've broken two of my trash cans in 6months. bastages.

i don't have a hairlady, cleaning lady, yard crew. otherwise i'd tip them.....our mailcarrier is not the same person on a day to day basis. i think they contract it out or something since we're in the county/country.

I'm sorry, but a tip to someone for doing their job, and nothing more, is silly.  I tip waiters/waitresses because I have a personal interaction with them, and they enhance my dining experience when they are good.  How does someone throwing a newspaper out of their car onto your driveway deserve a tip?  Yes, it's before dawn, but they knew that when they took the job.

I've set it on the trash can (last year it was 3 water bottles w/starbucks gf inside) so they saw it. I didn't think about the arm/trashcan thing but that kind is the guy who left the letter at my parents house so I'm guessing he keeps his eye out around christmas time.

I guess I never thought of it like tipping, just a nice thing to do for people in often taken for granted jobs. Yes they knew what they were signing up for when they got the job, but for some reason I've always done it (and my mom did it when I grew up) so I probably always will. We used to love watching the trash guys as kids and bringing them cookies around christmas was like meeting a celebrity.
