Green Gifts

I need a good eco friendly gift for my relatives.  They have solar panels, compost, etc - they do everything as eco friendly as possible.

I don't want to get anything decorative, and they don't need much for the kitchen (and I already got them a really nice bamboo cutting board last year).

I was thinking of a rain barrel, but I can't find any under $100, and I don't have a way of getting it to their place.

 Thanks!

Re: Green Gifts

  • I know you said you didn't really want to get them anything for the kitchen, but what about reusable glass straws?  They are really durable and more aesthetically pleasing (IMO) than stainless ones.  If they are soda drinkers, maybe a SodaStream?  GL!

I immediately thought of both of these, too.

How much are you looking to spend?  Do you have a local CSA or something you could buy them a share in?

Maybe a nice house plant to absorb some CO2? :-)

  • Would you consider individual gifts instead of a collective gift for the two of them? Maybe a couple nice skin care products for her and some awesome wool socks, travel mug for him? Do they read? A basic e-reader is only $80, and they cut down on paper for traditional books. Maybe a DIY household cleaner kit? Homemade laundry detergent with some EO in a pretty jar, some nice smelling multi-purpose cleaner?  I dig that stuff, and I'm currently loving the lemongrass scent of my laundry soap. I do believe it's the thought that counts, and I'm sure they do too :)

  • Do you know if they use shampoo?  Maybe they'd like Lush shampoo bars!

  • I think e-readers are a great idea if you can swing the price.

I know you said nothing decorative, but I would LOVE someone to buy me some nice EF candles and air fresheners. The good EF candles are pricey and just not something I buy for myself, and it's always tough to find EF air fresheners. The homemade stuff has never appealed to me.

Maybe a gift card to a store or restaurant, or a selection of organic/green treats and foods? I know my DH would love that.

Someone bought me a fairtrade, vegetable-dyed wool throw blanket from Guatemala a few years back and it's wonderful. Bedding in that category is tough to find.

I love this website, I often pick things from this website to send to my sister who is a very eco-friendly person. I also agree with the above poster, things from Lush are amazing. I swear by them, and they are all homemade and organic.

    Good luck!

  • Do they have an indoor worm composter for winter months? I love mine because I can compost food scraps from my household when it's 40 below, and it keeps my seedings in organic plant food.

If you are set on a rain barrel, there are onling instructions for making a very functional one yourself for a fraction of the cost. I used the following one-

But there are many designs out there with varying degrees of difficulty.

You could also get them a gift certificate for their local greenhouse or nursery- a gift of a tree is appreciated more and more as it grows and always has special meaning.

  • There are also cute tabletop/counter top compost containers out there now.  That might be an idea.  Some of them can be pricey.

Do they have reusable produce bags?  Found some great ones on etsy and love them.  Always get comments on them too!
