what nursing supplies do I need right away?
I have bras and tanks but nothing else.
I am not sure what, if anything, the hospital provides. Should I get pads? Disposable or washable?
What about Lanolin? A shield just in case?
I swear Im more anxious about breastfeeding than labor.
Re: what nursing supplies do I need right away?
I am a fan of the nipple shield. I used one with both kids but not everyone likes to use them. It allowed me to nurse and give my nipples a break. I never had trouble removing it and continuing bfing.
I was never a fan of the lanolin but I never had major issues. I use disposable pads. The cloth ones were very obvious through my clothes

Boobs and a baby :P
jk. Boppy was a must for me. Also lanolin.
Boppy, get 2 if you can, 1 in every level of the home. I use my milk to moisturize my nipples.
Lanolin. If you don't use it for your nipples, you can use it as lip balm and for diaper rashes. It does stain though, so don't wear it without pads. I learned that the hard way.
I had both disposable and cotton pads. I liked the disposable ones early on, but later switched to the cotton ones when I wasn't leaking as much.
Buy a pair of those soothies, they are AWESOME. Put them in the fridge so they get cool and put them on your nipples in between feedings.
I liked disposable pads the best.
I never used a shield and they can cause problems for mom and for baby. But like PP said, for some they're just fine.
I wouldn't go too crazy on anything, and just wait and buy as needed.
I prefered disposable pads for the reason Robin mentioned.
I received a ton of Lanolin in the hospital.
I'd wait on the shield and get it as needed.
Nursing pads. I would hold off on nipple shields unless you need them (why spend $10 or more if you don't need to?). The hospital *may* provide lanolin, but you might want to get some. I have used both disposable and washable, but I prefer disposable til supply regulates, because with the washable ones you just end up with soggy cloth against your boob. FWIW I only used a nipple shield with Delilah, and only for about 2 days so my nips could heal after she chomped me really bad (my fault for not making sure she was latched properly the first day).
ETA: The boppy is also a must-have. It is soooo helpful.

Other pps had good ideas - I loved the wool nursing pads. Thinner than even the disposables and absorbed WAY more. They are bigger (circumference), but I liked that so you couldn't see the end of them under my bra in shirts.
Are you united with the CCOKCs?
This. I didn't use the lanolin that long, but definitely the first week or two. Frozen peas for when your milk comes in and you are super engorged.
The only thing you absolutely need are pads. I'd probably have a couple tanks on hand as well and a nursing pillow. I have the My Breast Friend this time and like it a lot better than the boppy. They will give you a small tube of lanolin at the hospital and if you need a shield they also sell those at the lactation boutique at the hospital. Last time they even gave me some of the gel soothers to take home because my nips were pretty raw.
Other than that, I'd have a case of bottled water on hand or re-fillable bottles easily accessible from the bed, couch, wherever you might sit down to nurse as well as food you can eat with 1 hand and some good reading/netflix

Ditto on the My Brest Friend pillow, works so much better than the boppy plus supports your back. I ended up giving my boppy away. And water. Drink, drink, drink. It is the key to milk supply and you will get very hungry and thirsty. I found my iPhone was the best especially nursing all hours of the night. I also had a little tv in the nursery where I nursed both boys to help keep me awake when I was bf'ing. I couldn't nurse in bed because I would fall asleep.
Oh and don't hesitate to see a lactation consultant if you are having any difficulties. I had a helluva time with Noah and it took like three LC (not cupcakes
visits and a week or two to get him straight. They saved my life and sanity.
With Finn, I saw one in the hospital and was fully prepared to see her again, but Finn knew what to do and I had absolutely no issues whatsoever.
