2nd time mamas... a question

It looks like I'm definitely headed for a repeat c-section, since DD's firmly breech (might change), and I'm not a great VBAC candidate.  I've made my peace with all that, but I am wondering... they said they won't schedule a date until we are definitely 39 weeks.  That makes sense, and I totally get it for baby's development etc.

But, as a 2nd time mom - am I likely to go into labor before 39 weeks?  Did you?  I can't find any great info on this.  I'm just trying to figure out if I'm bound for some sort of scurry out of the house in the middle of the night type of event, or if we'll likely make it to the scheduled date.

Thanks!

Re: 2nd time mamas... a question

  • #1 was 2 weeks early and #2 was born on her due date. I think your chances are the same either way.
  • I've never went into labor before 39 weeks.  The anecdote is that 2nd babies come an average of 5 days sooner than first babies.  My SIL had a repeat c-section scheduled and went into labor a week before it.  They just bumped her to the top of the list when she got to the hospital.

  • I was induced with DS 2 days before my due date, there were no labor signs before then.
  • Babies come when they want. Mine came 9 days apart in gestational age, so DS was born at 38w4d, DD was born at 39w6d. Or however that math works. DS was 10 days early, DD was 1 day "early."

  • I think most likely you will be fine, unless you had preterm labor with DS or any other reason to suspect early delivery.

Also do you mean they won't set the date before you reach 39 weeks, or they won't schedule the actual surgery to take place before 39 weeks? My OB said if we did a repeat C/S she would schedule it around 36 weeks and it would take place at 39 weeks, maybe that is the same as what you are saying!

Also I am glad you have made your peace. I know it is not an easy decision to make and it sounds like DD is making the decision a little easier by making it for you!

We'll schedule it at my next appointment (34 weeks) for 39 weeks.  But the NP said the hospital won't allow it to be scheduled (unless there's an urgent reason) until you are literally 7 days before your calculated EDD, so no wiggle room there.  Sigh.

  • Okay, that is good to know. I have never heard of that policy!

And how are you so far along already?!

I have no idea - we don't even have a crib yet!

  • LO #1 was born at 39w6d and LO#2 was born at 38w6d.  I'd prefer a scurry out of the house ordeal so that LO could choose their own b-day :)

  • My babies like to come late and I was the anomaly at the birth center whose 2nd came later than the first. Smile  A was born at 41w and J came at 41w4d.  Generally 2nd babies come a little sooner.  At what gestational age was your son born?

  • I went into labor they day before my scheduled c-section. I think I was right around 39 weeks, maybe 39 weeks and one or two days. I went into labor a few days before my scheduled c-section with Noah too.

  • O was 38w5d. G&M were 37w3d, but the twins thing probably maybe changes the equation.  My C-section (breech baby) was scheduled for a week later.
  • Meg was nine days early. Ryan was a week late. Ainsley was five days late. They come when they want to. :) although, interestingly enough, I was pg with the first two for the same amount of days. A was three days longer than that.
