Holiday decor

How much do you decorate for the holidays? Do you do a tiny little tree, or go all out with the decor? And do you do about the same (Decoration wise) as an IN as you would at home?

I've always decorated a bit, but since we bought our house, I really do a lot more.

We have outdoor lights, a wreath on the front door and the door to the garage, a garland with lights on the banister, A wreath in the kitchen/dining room (on a cupboard), as well as a tree there and a wreath with a poinsetta in it as a permanent center piece on our dining table.

Our living room is on the second floor, where we have another tree and some random decorations, our nativity scene (FH has one from Italy with a number of extra characters :-) and also some lights in front of the windows of our living area. We have 2 more trees (a medium sized one and a tiny one) and if we expect guests I'll put one of them up in the guest room and I'm still debating putting one up in our master bed, or in our study area (which is on the same floor as the living room). I wish we'd be able to do more outside, but options are limited (What they sell here) and really expensive (plus, I don't have enough outlets outside to do much more)

Re: Holiday decor

  • We just have a 6 foot tree in the living room (not much space but at least we have high ceilings!) and a mini-Nativity Scene because it was important to DH. It's not much but I like it!
  • We have a 6 foot tree, that in retrospect should have been at least 8 feet (we have cathedral ceilings).  I am in the process of finishing off the dining room center piece and I'll put up our nativity today.  It was the first Christmas item that we bought together at the Christmas Market in Monte Carlo, so even though H isn't Catholic, he says it's still special to him.

This is out first real Christmas in our house (meaning we can afford to do more than eat this year), so I'm keeping it simple and as homemade as possible.  We'll add to the decor as we go on.

I would LOVE to wrap our veranda railings in boughs and little white lights, but 1) I haven't found any boughs and 2) we live on a street where everyone has gated properties, so the decorations wouldn't really be seen.  If I had (or do find) big red bows, they'll go on the doors.  No wreaths because spiders etc could decide to make them home and that's too close to automatic entry for my taste.

  • We have a 6 ft tree, I decorate our mantel with a bunch of baubles and a nativity scene that was hand-carved for me and I put a few other little bits out.  I'm slowly adding more and more each year...as DH doesn't love it, I have to be a bit sneaky.
I like pineapples...they make life just so much more interesting.
  • We usually put up a little nativity and buy a new piece for it each year.  This year we haven't gotten around to putting up the nativity or buying the new piece.  Better get on that today!

Someday I'd love to have a real live Christmas tree, but I might have to save that for when we spend Christmases with my parents and we can go cut one down ourselves.

  • We have tons of Christmas/Chanukah decorations. they've taken over our kitchen and living room. When we lived in the states, we had a much bigger flat so we'd get a live 6ft or so tree but here there's no where to put it so we have 2 fake small tabletop trees. We buy an Xmas ornamant everywhere we travel and I make sure to keep the Chanukah/Christmas ornamanets equal so it's just going to go up and up every year!

  • Somewhat. We put up our fake tree, a few decorations, a Nativity, and the massive Disney stocking my mom got BabyD.

And then a friend won a live tree and gave it to us! So we look extra festive with two trees and smelling like fresh pine.

  • Now that M is older and understands Christmas I am decorating more.

We have a 150cm real tree by the fireplace and a 90cm fake tree near our entrance. I hung some Christmas mittens on our door, hung random decorations around the apartment and have some santa window stickers in M's room and play area.

Tomorrow a classmate of M's is coming over after school and I'm going to have them paint some wooden tree ornaments and other little decorations.
