Give me the Lowdown on Hawaii please!

Hey folks!  This my first time posting here, I usually am on the MF board on the bump, but this board seems a lot busier, so I thought I might get more info here.  Just a quick background, DH is active Army (O3) and I am a ARNG veteran.  In 7 years we have lived at 4 duty stations (including our time in TRADOC) and just recently learned that our next PCS will likely be Hawaii (I am assuming Schofield, although this might not be accurate?)  This will be our first OCONUS assignment.  I have heard lots of things from other people who have lived there but I am curious to know more.  Specifically looking for the truth on housing and how your move went (how long did it really take to get HHG and vehicle delivered, etc.) I have read a little bit into transporting pets, but if you have real life experience with this I would love to hear it, we have 2 domestic cats.  Also, if you have info on services for a child enrolled in EFMP I would also be interested to here how that has gone for you (our DS in in speech therapy 2X a week right now.)  Thanks in advance for any and all advice/insight!

Re: Give me the Lowdown on Hawaii please!

  • We started getting HHG in September and just got the last shipment yesterday (it had been on island a month, though).  Ironically, the shipment picked up in August was the first to arrive, and the shipment that had been in storage and just needed to be put on a ship took the longest, about 6 months.

I have no pets, but we were told we were moving to Hawaii years ago when I did have a dog, so I researched it then.  We also moved her to Japan, so the process is similar.  ASAP get the cats to the vet.  I'm not sure if they're quarantined the way dogs are, but start the process early.

They'll ship 1 vehicle.  It took maybe 6 weeks.  I paid OOP for a 2nd vehicle, and that was faster, 2-3 weeks.  Get bus passes, and you'll be fine.

Housing... expensive but BAH does cover it.  I had to get used to how little you get for your money, but once I did the search was easier.  I just sucked it up and accepted that all my BAH would go toward rent.

Don't overwhelm yourself thinking of where to live until you know if it's schofield for sure.  But once you do, I have definite opinions :)

Hawaii is awesome.  I've only lived here 5 months, and I love it.  I don't want to leave!

  • I know this is an unrelated and unhelpful sidebar, but I can't believe it took 6 months to receive your HHG!  We had our stuff shipped to/from China and it took a month. Crazy!
  • We've been in Hawaii for over 3 years, about to leave soon. As far as housing goes, we chose to live in an apartment downtown and save the left over BAH rather than live in housing, as DH is getting out of the military in July and we plan to buy a house soon. However, we don't have kids, and didn't mind toughing it out to save a little money. You could probably get a pretty decent place if you used all of your BAH. If you have kids, though, I would recommend housing on base, you generally wouldn't be able to live in a house that size in a nice neighborhood for your BAH.

  • I recommend Island Pet Movers to help move your cats, I've heard rave reviews and plan on using them to transport our dog once we leave Hawaii.

Schofield is a little rough, but there are definitely housing options that are not on that base that are decent.

It's expensive and crowded, but we have enjoyed living here for the most part. H is Army but we live on Hickam and I really like living on this part of the island as opposed to the Schofield area. There's lots to see and do here, make sure you soak it all in!

  • I disagree about base housing if you have a young kid (and are o3). To me, base housing is only worthwhile if you have older kids who will play with neighborhood friends. At that rank on hickam, you'll likely be sharing a townhouse w aic's (judging by our driving around on base when house hunting). There's is absolutely nothing wrong with that, personally, but the money difference is large. I get more for my money in expensive waikiki than I would at hickam, but that's entirely rank dependant. If I was at schofield, I'd seriously consider living on north shore. However, in my small building, there are still a couple schofield officers, so it's apparently not too far for them.
