Our office does a Secret Santa every year, and this year I have a woman that's a new, first-time mother. Her boy is about 10 months old now. I'm wondering if I shlould get her a gift just for her as a woman, or for her and the baby? I have no idea what she needs so I was thinking maybe a Babies R Us gift card, which she could surely use, but she's probably living swimming in all things baby so maybe a gift for her would be more appropriate. She's more than just a mom. I guess my question is, would you rather get a gift for you,or something for the baby? It's Secret Santa so it won't be anything much anyway, but just wanted to get some thoughts.
Re: New moms
I am not a mom - but someone with a 10 month old isn't a "new mom" in my book. And I imagine she'd be miffed if a new co-worker saw her only as a mom and not an independent person. If you don't know her kid, don't go there.
What if someone got you a gift for your H because they know you're a newlywed? I'd be livid that they thought of me as a wife and nothing more, which is what you're saying.
Get her what you would get any other colleague you drew.

I've got a 10 month old.
He (and my daughter) have more than enough stuff.
Me, on the other hand? I don't spend anything on myself. After daycare and kid necessities, I don't have the money to spend.
I don't need anything from Babies R Us at this point. I would be grateful to get a gift card there - I'm sure I could find something - but get her a gift for HER.
For me. I never spend any money on myself anymore.
